"Very funny la...."

It was on this day in 1912 that Philadelphia’s Johnny McDermott, the youngest US Open champion in history, successfully defends his U.S. Open title, becoming the first golfer to break par for 72 holes. McDermott finishes at 2-under-par 294 on the par-74 Country Club of Buffalo course.

It was also on this day in 1876 that the gunfighter, lawman and Civil War fighter James 'Wild Bill' Hickok stroked his luxuriant moustache for the very last time. During a game of poker in Deadwood, South Dakota, he was shot in the back of the head by ‘Crooked Nose’ Jack McCall. Legend has it that Hickock was holding a pair of aces and a pair of eights with the fifth card yet to be dealt. This hand has since become known as ‘Bang! Arrrrrgh!’. (Are you sure you don’t mean ‘Dead Man’s Hand’? – Ed)

It’s tillukku vid fodingardegnum as they say in the Faroe Islands to British golfer Brian Davis (33); the film director Wes Craven (68) and the actor Peter O’Toole (75). Yeah, we thought he was dead too…
