On this day, in 1983 and in 1988, Juli Inkster win the SAFECO classic. Her 1983 triumph came after she pipped Kathy Whitworth, JoAnn Washam, and Cindy Lincoln. In 1988, her 10-under-par 278 was enough to defeat Ok-Hee Ku by three strokes.


Juli Inkster, born Juli Simpson in 1960 in California, has has won 31 tournaments to date on the LPGA Tour including seven majors. She has played in seven Solheim Cups and is third on the all-time career money list. Juli was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000.


Also on this day, in 1830, a horse beat the first American made locomotive in a race near Baltimore.


Meanwhile, in 1970, Jimi Hendrix, ever the showman, died a totally rock 'n' roll death after asphyxiating on his own vomit following a drug overdose at a party.
