'Nobody told me green blends into the surroundings at Augusta ...'

The likeable Liverpool lad Nick Dougherty has been tipped for great things since his schoolboy days, and this week he gets to put it to the test as he tees it up for the first time in the Masters. In Golf We Trust sat down with Nick to get his feelings as the Masters rookie makes his first trip up Washington Road and around Amen Corner ...

IGWT: What do you think your feelings will be when you're actually playing the Masters for real?
ND: I can't wait. I think it's going to be a great experience, and I’ve always dreamed of going here. Hopefully I’ll play well and it would be a dream to be in the mix of things on Sunday afternoon. Obviously you have to putt well here, so I’m prepared for that. I’ll probably play a couple of practice rounds with [his mentor] Nick Faldo, and pick his brain and learn as much as I can from him. He knows the course very well obviously, so his knowledge will be invaluable.

IGWT: What are your expectations?
ND: I’ll be playing to win, but I do need to learn the course and especially the greens. With no previous experience of playing there, I expect to at least make the cut and just do the best I can do. If I can play well enough to get exempt for next year, then I’ll be very happy.

While you're at it, why not check out our full Me, Myself & I interview with Nick Dougherty ...

A protégé of Nick Faldo, he has risen through the ranks, initially finding success in the Faldo Junior Series events. A lot has been expected from him ever since he won the rookie of the year award on the European Tour in the year 2002. Last year in his first appearance in the U.S. Open he finished a very creditable tied 7th after the end of four tough rounds at Oakmont. In fact at the end of the first round he found himself on the very top of the leaderboard.

Last year was a pretty good year for him because later in the year he won the Alfred Dunhill links Championship and ended up just outside the top ten in the order of merit. The win at the links was just his second win on the European Tour.

It is believed that Dougherty paid a sneak peak to the course last week in preparation for the masters and spent nearly 8 hours to complete a single round playing alone. He claimed he had to do that to figure out every nook and cranny of the course and more importantly get rid of the “wow” factor that first timers feel when they are at Augusta.

Of course only three players have won the Masters on debut but I think Dougherty would be more than satisfied if he can put in a top ten finish. Fuzzy Zoeller remains the only guy to have achieved the feat of winning on debut in the last 70 years at the Masters
