"Smile! Oh alright, don't then..."

Today’s the day that in 1929 the Great Britain and Ireland captain George Duncan beat the mighty American Walter Hagen in the second Ryder Cup match at Moortown, Leeds. Well, we say ‘beat’ but he absolutely mullered him, 10 & 8. The win helped the Brits to a 7-5 victory and Hagen, golf’s first real showmen, was never the same again.

And today in 1981, the man who wasn’t even the best drummer in The Beatles, Ringo Starr, married American actress Barbara Bach. In 1972, the Apollo 16 spacecraft crash lands in the Pacific Ocean. It’s OK, it was meant to. It had safely taken three astronauts to the Moon.

Two years later however, a Soviet airliner that was not meant to crash, did, killing all 108 passengers and crew on board shortly after taking off from Leningrad. in 1950, The Communist Party was outlawed in Australia, while the fourth Modern Olympic Games began today in 1908 in Lodon. Britain finished top of the medal table with 56 golds. Those were the days.

And we say La Multi Ani! as they say in Romania to Tess “What’s she doing with him?” Daly (37), Scottish singer Sheena Easton (49), darts genius Eric Bristow (51).
