On this day in 1980, despite blowing a six shot lead in the final round, Curtis Strange managed to keep his composure and beat Lee Trevino to capture the Michelob-Houston Open. Greg Norman also stormed to a seven-stroke victory over Dan Pohl in the 1986 Las Vegas Invitational, finishing an impressive 27-under-par for the 90-hole event.
Elsewhere in the world, on this day in 1979, Margaret Thatcher, leader of the Conservative party, was sworn in as Prime Minister. Indeed, tough talk and tough economics helped her to become Britain’s first female PM. Heaven knows how, after resigning in 1990 following an 11 year stint in office, she became the longest serving prime minister in 150 years. Thankfully, Maggie saw sense to hang up her boots following some shocking policies on local government taxation, not to mention an increasing dislike of her within the Conservative party. Five years earlier on this day, ABBA yet again danced and sang their way to the top of the British charts with yet another annoyingly catchy tune, this time Eurovision song contest winner Waterloo. And a year earlier (1973 if you’ve lost count) across the pond in Chicago saw the completion of the world’s tallest building in the Sears Tower…. only for it to come crumbling down the next day due to some extremely dodgy building work (only kidding).
It’s Frederique Seeholzer! as they say in Sweden to winner of the 1986 PGA Championship, Bob Tway (49), half decent Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas (21), ashamed to admit she’s fit GMTV presenter Kate Garraway (40), and the slightly less annoying half of The Mighty Boosh duo, Julian Barratt (40). It was also on this day in 1984 that British Monroe herself, Diana Doors, shuffled off this mortal coil, aged 53.
