Jack Nicklaus: 'Fancy a game of hangman?'

What a year it was for Jack Nicklaus. He won five PGA Tour events in 1963, including The Masters and The PGA Championship for the first time and on this very day he nailed the first of five Tournament of Champions titles, defeating Tony Lema and Arnold Palmer by five strokes. He ended up winning the grand total of $100, 040 in prize money.

Among a curious assortment of events in the real world, Christopher Columbus discovered the island of Jamaica on this day in 1494, while republican prisoner Bobby Sands died in the Maze prison on this day in 1981, 66 days into a hunger strike.

It's som owie nek mein aryouk yrinyu! as they say in Cambodia to Swaziland's finest acting export, Richard E Grant, best known for his unforgettable role as Withnail in 1987's Withnail And I (50), annoying r&b tidy beard Craig David (27) and gritty Brit soulstress Adele (20).

It would also have been the 190th birthday of Prussian philosopher Karl Marx, had he not joined the classless society in the sky in 1883.
