They were meant for each other - the so-called fifth Major and the nearly man of Major tournament golf. That's a bit harsh, perhaps. And it does glaze over the fact that most people who aren't employed or related to Paul Goydos were happy to see Sergio Garcia win The Players Championship in the first play-off in tournament history, after Goydos's bogey on 18 saw him stumble at the final hole of regulation play.

We couldn't be happier for Sergio (we could if The Bet Detective had put a few quid on Sergio Garcia before the tournament started - Ed), particularly as he had the good grace to thank Tiger for playing his part by not playing the tournament. As it happens, Garcia joins Tiger as the only players to finish runner-up The Players Championship then go on to win the event the following year.
