Brian Barnes: Nice work if you can get it...

It was on this day in 1945 that British golf welcomed one of its most famous giant killers into the world; Brian Barnes. Born in Addington, Surrey, Barnes was taught the game by his father, who plied his trade as a secretary of a golf club. After being taken under the wing of 1951 Open Champion Max Faulkner, Barnes mustered up enough talent to win the 1964 British Youths’ Championship, turning professional as a result.

Despite being one of Europe’s leading players in the 1970s (eight of his 17 professional wins came in the decade of the flair and disco), pipe-smoking Barnes will always be remembered for an achievement that many players of his era could boast about; beating Jack Nicklaus not once, but twice in one day. That Nicklaus was the reigning Masters and PGA Champion mattered little to the irripressable Barnes, who defied logic by defeating ‘The Golden Bear’ in both the morning and afternoon singles of the 1975 Ryder Cup. What’s more, after his morning defeat, Nicklaus uttered confidently to Barnes: “There ain’t no way you’re going to beat me again.” In fact, it's probably about time we put Brian Barnes in our Hall Of Fame...

On a long hot day in 1943, a 60-strong mob from the Los Angeles Naval Reserve beat up every Hispanic citizen they could find, starting the week long ‘Zoot Suit Riots’. Tensions started as the servicemen had to walk through LA’s notorious Chicano neighbourhood on their way back to barracks after going out drinking. With Filipino and African-American men also being targeted, the riots turned into a six-day brawl featuring thousands of servicemen. Hispanic’s were dragged from every bar stool, bus stop and car and beaten with a sadistic frenzy and, unsurprisingly for the time, the Hispanic contingent were arrested, while the sailors were left to be dealt with by the Military.

And it’s Guido Van Der Valk! as they say in the Netherlands to three times U.S Open champ Hale Irwin (63), Cuban President Raul Castro (77), huge-armed clay-court monster Rafael Nadal (22), one-trick pony Kelly Jones (34), and MOR queen Suzi Quatro (58).

Is it just me or does he look like Eric Bristow?
