When you think about the nearly men of the Open Championship, they don't come much closer than Doug Sanders at St Andrews in 1970. Faced with a 30-inch tiddler to win his first major, Sanders watched his effort trickle agonisingly wide. Despite a valiant playoff effort against Jack Nicklaus, the Golden Bear sank a seven footer on the 18th to hoist the Claret Jug. Does it still play on Sanders' mind? 'It doesn't hurt much any more. These days I can go a full five minutes without thinking about it.'
