Jack Nicklaus: 'My preciousss. Tricksy hobbitses taking my Claret Jug...'

On this day in 1978, Jack Nicklaus won his 15th Major title and his second Open at St Andrews. The Golden Bear finished at 7-under-par 281 for a two-stroke margin over Ben Crenshaw, Raymond Floyd, Tom Kite, and Simon Owen at the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.

Tom Watson had started the final day in the lead, but a repeat of the previous year’s Duel In The Sun at Turnberry never materialized as Watson shot a 76.

On this day in 1997, Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace was shot dead on the steps of his Miami home. Detectives trace suspect Andrew Cunanan to a houseboat three miles from the murder scene on 25 July 1997 and after a five-hour siege a swat team storms the boat and find Cunanan dead, having shot himself in the head with the gun he used to kill Versace. Any motive or clues go to the grave with him.

Meanwhile, it’s penblwydd hapus as they say in certain parts of Western England to plausible Idi Amin Forest Whitaker (55), the scarily-reconstructed blonde Brigitte Nielsen (44) and Dutch master Rembrandt Van Rijn (looking good for 402 years-old). He was a painter, by the way, not a footballer.
