Sandy Lyle: 'And to think I nearly retired in the first round...'

On this day in 1985, Sandy Lyle’s one shot Open victory over Payne Stewart at Royal St Georges made him the first British winner in 16 years. At the start of the final day Sandy was three shots behind overnight leaders Bernhard Langer and Australian David Graham. The key was an unlikely birdie on 14, when he recovered from the long rough with with a 45-foot putt for an unlikely birdie.

Elsewhere, on this day in 1979, Seve Ballesteros became the car park champion, winning his first Open title by three shots over Ben Crenshaw and Jack Nicklaus at Royal Lytham. Then Ian Baker-Finch posts remarkable weekend rounds of 64 and 66 to win the 1991 Open by two strokes over Mike Harwood at Royal Birkdale in England.

In the real world, nothing much happened. Some bloke called Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon on this day in 1969, but apparently it was all shot on a film studio lot somewhere.

It’s geriausi linkejimaigimtadienio progal! as they say in Lithuania to Robert Gamez (40), acting-types Josh Hartnett (30) and Robin Williams (57), as well as Pulitzer Prize-winning Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961).
