Calvin Peete: 'Peeteaboo...'

On this day in 1982, Calvin Peete won the Michelob Championship by two strokes over Bruce Lietzke. Peete was born in Detroit Michigan in 1943 and learned the game in his 20s in Rochester, New York, playing on the municipal course at Genese Valley Park.

Peete was by far the most succesful black golfer on tour of his era, winning 12 times on tour and representing the US in the 1983 and 1985 Ryder Cup teams. His game was built on his phenomenal accuracy, his iron play was majestic, making up for his lack of power off the tee due to a badly broken arm that never healed properly.

Meanwhile in 1978, the first baby was born through IVF in Oldham and District General Hospital. Louise Brown's arrival seemed miraculous at the time, but the practice is now common, with over 300,000 women conceiving through IVF by 1999 with a success rate of 17per cent.

Talking of the birth and all that, it's quchjaj qoSlIj! as they say in Klingon to the funnily-named LPGA Tour member Ashli Price-Bunch (33), comedy-actor in search of a good script Matt LeBlanc (41), artschool punk incarnate Thurston Moore from alternative music legends Sonic Youth (50) and striking clothes horse and Mrs David Bowie Iman (53).
