Brandt Snedeker: 'Look into my eyes, not around the eyes...'

1. A quick history lesson

One of the oldest events on the PGA Tour, the Wyndham Championship dates back to 1938. Greensboro Daily News sports editor Laurence Leonard and local golf pro George Corcoran started pushing the idea for a golf tournament in the area in 1937. A year later, financial backing was put in place for the tournament by businessman Joseph M. Bryan, and the greater Greensboro Open was born.

2. It's a welcome return to Sedgefield this year

In its first four years, the tournament was played alternately at Sedgefield CC and Starmount Forest CC. It pretty much stayed that way until the late 1970s when Sedgefield's members decided they weren't happy with the annual invasion of their club, and in 1977, the event was moved to Forest Oaks CC. This year, however, will see a return to Sedgefield, which is the only Donald Ross original course on tour.

3. Slammin' Sammy's King

The undisputed king of this event is Sam Snead, who's won it eight times (which is a PGA Tour record). Snead used to bury his money in tomato cans in his garden and, after winning the event for the seventh time, he jokingly suggested that Starmount's course owner should dig up a few of the cans to make the course tougher. Sammy was banned as a result of his remarks, but won for the last time in 1965 at Sedgefield (somewhere he called his second home).

4. Some decent players have won it

A certain Ben Hogan won by nine strokes in 1940, despite the tournament being delayed by three days due to snow. Since then, Byron Nelson, Doug Sanders, Gary Player, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Tom Weiskopf, Seve Ballesteros and Sandy Lyle have all got their hands on the trophy. Talk about a roll call of big names...

5. It was a first for Snedeker last year

The Wyndham Championship capped off a remarkable year for Brandt Snedeker in 2007. After shooting a 61 in the Buick Invitational at the start of the year, Snedeker made eight consecutive cuts from January through to March and made the top 100 in the world rankings. His just reward indeed came at the Wyndham Championship, where he picked up his first PGA Tour title and won rookie of the year for his efforts.
