Walter Hagen: Helluva slice that, Walt...

It was on this day in history in 1914 that Walter Hagen recovered from a nasty bout of food poisoning brought on by a dodgy lobster dinner to win the US Open at Midlothian Country Club near Chicago.

In taking the title, Hagen also became the first wire to wire winner of the event.

Elswhere, on this day in 1920, Jock Hutchinson entered the PGA Championship as an alternate, then fought his way to the final against Douglas Edgar... where he lost. Only kidding, he posted a one up victory over Edgar to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy.

It was on this day in 1997 that Mancunian rockers Oasis released their highly anticipated and absolutely rubbish third album Be Here Now.

It was so awful that the album’s producer, Owen Morris, said of the recordings, 'The only reason anyone was there was the money. Noel had decided Liam was a shit singer. Liam had decided he hated Noel's songs... Shit recordings.' You won’t get any argument here…

Incidentally, Leon Trotsky died today from that head injury.

It’s zbigniew boniek! as they say in Krakow to PGA Tour journeyman Richard Zokol (50), Sex and the City strumpet Kim Cattrall (52), hirsute country and western legend Kenny Rogers (62) and Milkshake minx Kelis (29).
