On this day in 1894, the United States Golf Association was formed when various delegates met in New York. The formation would shape the sport in America, with the centralised body writing the rules, conducting national championships and establishing the handicapping system.

Facinatingly, on this day in 1965, a 70mph speed limit was introduced to all rural roads.  In 1989 Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate re-opened after nearly thirty years,  and in 2003 a magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit near San Simeon, California, killing two people and injuring a further forty.
