Paul Casey and his cheesy grin move up to third in the world after Wentworth win...

Out of the six billion people or so on earth, only two are better at golf than Paul Casey. Fact. Not one to piss about, Casey birdied three of his final four holes to clinch the BMW PGA Championship, piling on world ranking points at the same rate Tim Herron puts away whoppers at Burger King...

I`ve been waiting for and foreseen this to happen: seven out of the 10 best players are non-americans.The peak of golf is about to come home again to Europe.

I think that the World Golf Rankings are flawed in how they rank the best golfers in the world. The Official World Golf Rankings utilizes player performance over a two year time span to decide how a golfer ranks present day alongside their peers. Right now, a golfers present day ranking is not only based on 2009 performance, but 2008 performance as well. In fact, at this point in the year – player performance from the end of the 2007 golf season will also have effect on their present day ranking.

And this should be fair? I’m not one hundred percent sure, but I do believe that golf is the only major sport to rank their participants in this manner.

A player having a dismal 2009 season still has the opportunity to rank extremely well on the Official World Golf Rankings based upon performance from one, or even two years ago.

Sergio Garcia is a perfect example. Right now, Sergio is ranked 7th on the World Golf Rankings. According to the Official World Golf Rankings, Sergio is the 7th best player in the entire world right now! Let’s take a good look at Mr. Garcia’s performance in 2009.

And there are several other examples just like Sergio throughout the World Golf Rankings!

Sergio Garcia has played in 17 events so far in 2009. The last month or so, Sergio seems to have gotten it together a bit with a 4th place finish at the Wyndham and a T10 at the US Open. But that’s pretty much it. This year, Sergio has missed the cut 3 times. His best finish is a fourth. Is best five finishes are a 4th, T10, T14, and two T22. Sergio Garcia is a prime example of a golfer whose present day ranking is strongly based on 2008 performance where he won once, had three second place finishes and 6 Top 10s.

A system has been designed to rank the best golfers in the world based on their performance for the 2009 golf season only. The Golf Rankings 2009 provides a ranking of the players from the PGA Tour, the LPGA Tour, and the Champions Tour based on performance and consistency in the 2009 golf season. These three tours are then combined to give an overall ranking as well. This is an experiment. In 2010, tours from around the world will be added as well in an attempt to provide a sensible alternative to the Official World Golf rankings.

I invite you to visit the Golf Rankings 2009 website and view the rankings as they exist today. The rankings are updated by Tuesday morning each week. Your opinion and suggestions are invaluable to ensure that these rankings become a sensible and viable alternative to the Official World Golf Rankings. You are encouraged to sign the guestbook and leave your comments.
