The new Scotty Cameron: better looking than Cameron Diaz in a ra-ra skirt...

Scotty Cameron putters by Titleist are expanding their range with the new Studio Select putters, and the popular club maker is set to release the new clubs in the UK on March 15th.

The new line is four Newport models, with each of the new clubs available in 33”, 34” and 35”. Titleist are offering two different body styles and three different neck configurations to help you pick the right club in both appearance and length.

The Newport, Newport 1.5, Newport 2 and Newport 2 Mid Slant also feature a high toe set-up and a stepless steel shaft for a clean unbroken playing appearance. A soft 303 stainless material delivers a crisp solid feel on impact and has created durability with a timeless style. The Newport 2 is also available left handed in all three lengths, and you can expect to be paying in the region of £220 for the club.

Cobra irons: see what happens if you leave them in the hands of a four-year old with a lego fixation

Cobra have unveiled new versions of their S9 and FP irons for 2008 - and they'll coming to a club near you soon, unless you're one of our readers from Qatar, that is.

The S9 irons have been designed for maximum accuracy, distance and feel while using the lightweight three-piece polymer topline to redistribute weight lower in the heel and toe. Combine that with the low profile and wide sole and you get more from the clubs than ever before.

The Men’s set includes 4-iron to gap wedge and will retail at £438 (steel) and £533 (graphite). This graphite version is also available for Seniors and Ladies and will include 5-iron to gap wedge.

Cobra’s FP range has been re-engineered to help players benefit from a balance of playability and forgiveness. The sleeker head design and full cavity backed plate with urethane membrane gives the club a great look.

A relieved mid-width sole design offers greater MOI and precision weighting to provide solid playability in a wide variety of conditions.

The Men’s set includes 4-iron to gap wedge and will retail at £346 (steel) and £415 (graphite). Like the S9 range, the Seniors and Ladies clubs are available in graphite (£415), and cover from 5-iron to gap wedge.

Golfers are also getting the chance to feel the Cobra’s performance as they head on a tour over 400 golf clubs in the UK between March and July.

Co-designed by Grizzly, Tony and Gerry apparently...

Our putting's bad enough without having what looks like a GPS system sellotaped to the blade of the club. But we know there are plenty of equipment geeks among you who wouldn't think twice about shelling out £250 for the Adams DiXX Putter.  The general idea is that the DiXX gathers data on the five key components of your putting stroke — path, impact position, face angle, swing tempo, and speed balance — then tells you know just how far off the mark you are. Whether it works after you've wrapped it around a tree is not known, but if they send us one further research will be undertaken.

The full specs are on the Adams site.

PING found out it had more club than the USGA in its court fight in 1990 ...

On this day in 1990, proving that the US Golf Association usually sees things straight after about ... oh, 100 times or so, finally settled a long-running lawsuit with Karsten Manufacturing of Arizona over the legality of the company's PING Eye 2 irons.

The Eye 2 at the time was a very popular iron and was in many a tour player's bag: but the USGA, as it is wont to do, had made a stink about the square grooves on the clubs' faces and the distance between the sides of the grooves. As a settlement, the USGA ruled that PING Eye 2's were legal, but that all future irons had to conform to groove-width measurements ...

Top row (l-r): Titleist's new forged and graduated ZM and ZB irons for the low-handicapper.
Bottom row (l-r): The AP2 and AP1 irons for those who are aspiring to hit them like the pros.

Happy days, indeed! Christmas season may be past, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to look forward to: In fact, there is plenty ... as Titleist are rolling out a series of four new sets of irons for 2008 - available in Europe from March 15th - which are aimed at the serious to (let's face it) awesome player.

Titleist's AP1 and AP2 irons should fit well into the bag of a quite good (or as Titleist calls you: "aspiring") player - dual-cavity, multi-material heads that will give tour-like performance to the Above-Average Joe who wants to stripe a few more shots, with the additional benefit of better feel. Try it and see it they're not right. We think they're spot on, really.

For the hotshots amongst us, or those who aspire to that status, Titleist rolls out the ZB Forged iron (a cavity-to-muscle back iron) and ZM Forged iron (tradtional muscle-back). These irons are tailored for the extremely good player: and Titleist confidently suggests that they "anticipate our Tour staff gravitating to the new AP2, ZB and ZMs."

Regardless of where you fit into the range, these irons look great ... and they are designed for "advanced performance you can feel" all the way through the range. They're all made for good players who don't need a lot of help, but Titleist promises that the AP1 will help a 5-9 handicapper bridge the 20-mph swing-speed difference to tour-player speed. And don't forget ... every day gets longer and longer from now until the middle of June!
