Davis Love win in 1992: 'Pull my finger...'

It’s a particularly profitable day in the golfing calendar of Davis Love III. He has won the MCI Classic (now known as the Verizon Heritage) five times in total, with three of his victories coming on April 19. Love, a native of North Carolina, finished with a 67 to beat Steve Jones, by one stoke in 1987. In 1992, he posted a closing 68 to win by four strokes from Chip Beck. His greatest triumph at the tournament, held at the Harbour Town Golf Link on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, came in 1998 when he carded an 18 under par to coast to a seven-stroke victory from Glen Daly.

Elsewhere, this day in 1951 saw a 21 year-old from Sweden, Kerstin Håkansson, named as the first ever Miss World. In 1956 Prince Rainer of Monaco married ill-fated actress Grace Kelly. In 1993, 77 people died in a fire in Waco, Texas. The fire marked the end of a 51-day siege at the headquarters of the Branch Davidson Sect. In 1995, a huge car bomb at a government building killed 168  peopleand left over 500 injured, in Oklahoma City. 2005 saw Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger elected new leader of the Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Benedict XVI.

Today marks the birthday of Bill Joe Patton (86). Patton is best remembered for leading for most of the 1954 Masters as an amateur before eventually yielding the lead to eventual winner Sam Snead.

It’s chestit rojden den as they say in Bulgaria to to scary hip-hop label boss Suge Knight (43) double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes (38), rock chick and Hollywood actress Kate Hudson (29) and lanky Russian tennis screamer Maria Sharapova (21).

It would also have been the 105th birthday of Chicago Prohibition agent of the 1920s who was immortalised by Kevin Costner in the movie The Untouchables, had he not joined the great  speakeasy in the sky in 1957.
