Jerry Pate, meet commissioner Deane Beman ... and the lake on the 18th at Sawgrass ...

On this day in 1982, Jerry Pate delivered one of the greatest quotes in the last 30 years of golf history when he told PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman: "You better give Judy your wallet, I'm gonna throw your ass in the lake."

And know what? Jerry Pate did just that. Actually, he threw more than just Beman's ass in the lake. It was half lighthearted gesture, half player protest. But Pate had just won the inaugural Players Championship at the TPC at Sawgrass, a new stadium course which the players considered diabolical (they still do, but that's by-the-by). And it was on this day way back in 1940 that Ben Hogan closed with a 70 to beat Sam Snead by three shots in the North and South Open at Pinehurst - setting the stage for a rivalry that would hit greater heights ten years later after Hogan's near-fatal car crash ...

And in the real world, in 1993, the IRA attacked the influential town of Warrington, 30 years after America's tightest security prison, Alcatraz, was locked down forever ... and in 1969, legendary crooner Frank Sinatra released My Way - the song that would haunt the end of middle-aged couples' wedding receptions forever. And in 1989, Sports Illustrated broke the news that baseball hero Pete Rose was tied to allegations of gambling on ... you guessed it, baseball.

And in 1918, the Second Battle of the Somme began in World War I, as if the first one wasn't bad enough ...

So it's James Kamte! ... as they say in South Africa to former James Bond thespian Timothy Dalton (62); creepy bad-guy actor Gary Oldman (50), the former rock of Germany's defence Lothar Matthäus (47); and some guy named Kevin Federline who is famous for once being married to Britney Spears ...
