On this day, in 1973, Lanny Wadkins won the CVS Charity Classic with a nine under par, two stroke victory over Tom Jenkins, Lee Elder and Rik Massengale. Jerry Lanston Wadkins Jr. was born in 1945 in Richmond, Virginia. He turned pro in 1971 and won his first tournament the following year, the Sahara Invitational in Las Vegas.

In all, Wadkins would win 21 times on the PGA Tour and pick up one major, the 1977 PGA Championship, despite coming close to several other major wins.

Lanny holds the joint record for Ryder cup appearances by an American, tied with Raymond Floyd and Billy Casper on eight. In 1985 he scooped the PGA Player of the Year award after victories in the Bob Hope Classic, the L.A Open and the Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic.

Also on this day, in 1839, Jacque Daguerre presented his new photographic process, the Daguerreotype, to the French Academy of Sciences. Painstakingly developed over a period of four years, the pictures included one of Daguerre's mum trying to shield her face from the camera, a couple of his cat and one where his finger was over the lens.
