Charlie Sifford: You can never go wrong with the flat cap and cigar combo...

On this day in 1967, Charlie Sifford, the first black player to gain full PGA playing rights, captured his first PGA Tour title by winning the Greater Hartford Open. A victim of the PGA’s ‘caucasian-only clause’ in its constitution, Sifford endured death threats, intimidation and discrimination in his bid to overturn the ruling.

Even Tiger Woods has paid tribute to Sifford. “If it wasn’t for Charlie,” he once said, “we wouldn’t be here.”

This is also the day that in 1940 the exiled Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky (above) is wounded in his home in Mexico City when KGB agent Ramon Mercader sneeks up behind him and drives an ice pick into his skull.

Serves him right for having a goatee, if you ask us. Find out what happened to him tomorrow. Here’s a clue: It’s not a happy ending…
