Miller ... or Player? ... Aw, we give up.

Jack didn't win it. On this day in 1974, the race for supremacy at the top of the golf world was so tight, they had a split decision when it came to handing out the post-season awards.

Golf World magazine, handed the difficult task of choosing a Player of the Year, took the easy way out and gave co-honours to both Johnny Miller and Gary Player.

What did Player do in '74? ... Well, capping a year in which the little South African legend was named to the World Golf Hall of Fame while still an active player, all Player did was win both the Masters and the Open Championship, while adding to his impressive collection of frequent flyer miles.

And what did Johnny Miller do? ... Well all the shaggy haired Mormon did was put together one of the most blinding individual seasons in PGA Tour history, winning at eight tour stops and racking up a record total of $353,021 (that's $1.5 million in today's money). How dominant was Miller in 1974? It took another 25 years, until '99, when a fellow named Tiger Woods won eight tournaments in a calendar year ...

It was also on this day, in 1975, that BBC television presenter Ross McWhirter, the co-founder of the Guinness Book of Records, was murdered on his doorstep by the provisional IRA after having offered £50,000 for information on terrorists.

Not much else happened on November 27, so take this completely useless ammunition to your Tuesday night pub quiz: It was on this day that first Eddystone Lighthouse was destroyed in Great Storm of 1703. For an extra bonus point, tell the quizmaster that whilst most people think the lighthouse is in Cornwall, the treacherous Eddystone Rocks are actually situated in the city limits of Plymouth, and therefore belong to the county of Devon. So there! ...

That said, it's Saeng il chuk ha ham ni da! as they say in Korean, to a couple of baseballers: Philadelphia Phillies genius shortstop Jimmy Rollins, the National League MVP, is 29; and Mike Scioscia, the God-like manager of the Los Angeles Angels is 49. You don't care but I do ...

And it's musical b-day greetings singer Shin Hye Sung of the Korean boy band Shinhwa, whose big hit Perfect Man has the catchy chorus of "jebal nege dagchin gothong sogeso narur guhene jugeni il nyon gathun harurur sanun ge nomu hime gyowo gyondir su obso", which roughly translates as "Ya, the perfect man is who I be, sittin' on top with ya, but more swifter, stronger than your nob liquor, money hoes and clothes don't let the clues get ya, they not fear." Everybody sing along! ...

(No, we've never heard of Shinhwa either, but check out those moves and the audience reaction!)

Speaking of great moves, today would have been the 67th birthday for legendary martial artist Bruce Lee, who is kicking butt and taking names in the Kung-fu Wing of the Great Beyond; and the 28th birthday for the great axeman Jimi Hendrix, who started playing the eternal guitar solo in 1970.
