Tiger Woods: "This is the last time I'll smile in a goddamn photo..."
Today is a celebration of the US Junior Amateur Championship and all of the great things that its winners have gone onto achieve. On this day in 1934, the tournament's format was changed to a six-day event with no 36-hole qualifying event at the tournament site, and the semi finals and finals were both changed to 36-hole matches. On this day in 1992, it was the turn of a certain Tiger Woods to win the US Junior Amateur Championship.
Woods indeed succesfully defended the title he won in 1991, and repeated the feat in 1993 to become the only player to have won the Junior Amateur more than once. Surely you don't need reminding of what he's gone on to do? Well, he's won lots of golf tournaments, made stacks of money and even walked on the moon!
29 years earlier on this day, it was Johnny Miller's turn to win the tournament. Miller defeated Enrique Sterling 2&1 at Eugene Country Club, and a decade later, he went on to win the US Open at Oakmont.
In the days of skirts and sandals, on this day in 1184BC, Troy was sacked and burnt in the Trojan War. In case you've forgotten, the war started after a tear-up between the Goddesses Athena, Hera and Aphrodite over a golden apple. Ok, look, we know it all sounds a bit dodgy, this fighting between gods and all, and we also doubt the brevity of that huge horse and accept that the film version was utter tripe. In 1870, though, German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann excavated a site near the Dardanelles Strait in Turkey, which scholars have agreed to be Troy. So there.
Join us in crouching down on our knees and roaring Gunnar Mueller! as they say in Sweden to Brad Faxon (48), ZZ Top's hairless drummer, Frank Beard (60), annoying doctor Hugh Laurie (50), and ridiculously named actor Shia LeBeouf (23). And on this day in 1979, John Wayne (or Marion Morrison to give him his birth name) banged through the big saloon doors in the sky, aged 72.
