'Scotland? What's not to like?'

Say what you like about golf, but you can't fault it for sportsmanship. After the US and Great Britain play a draw in the Curtis Cup Matches at Gleneagles on this day in 1936, the British team declines to share possession of the Cup, declaring that it had not won any claim to it. The US had won the Cup in 1934, and thus retained possession of it.

Meanwhile, in the real world, Roger Bannister became the first man to run a mile in less than four minutes on this day in 1954, while notorious Moors Murderers, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley were jailed for life on this day in 1966.

It's Shuvo Jonmodin! as they say in Bengal to former Prime Minister Tony Blair and Graeme Souness (both 58), Hollywood heart-throb with a conscience George Clooney (47) and manager of Ipswich Town Jim Magilton (45).

It would also have been the 93rd birthday of film actor and director Orson Welles had he not joined the Oscars party in the sky in 1985.
