Johnny Miller: in his prime he was slightly cooler than Jim Nantz...

Johnny Miller, winner of the 1973 US Open and 1976 British Open, was born in San Francisco, California in 1947. He was a dashing player during a golden age of golf, but like so many top pros his flame burned brightest for just a few short years of his career, when he was seemingly unbeatable. He now works as a TV analyst on US television.

Talking of fames, it was on this day in 1992 that Los Angeles was in flames from the work of rioters, arsonists and looters following the acquittal of four white police officers accused of beating black motorist Rodney King. Creepily, it's also the day that Adolf Hitler married Eva Braun in a Berlin bunker and designated Admiral Karl Dönitz as his successor. But more on that tomorrow...

It's torson odriin mend hurgee! as they say in Mongolia to funny-ish actor and funnier stand-up Jerry Seinfeld (54), very serious thesp Daniel Day Lewis (51), doll-faced actress Michelle Pfeiffer (50) and the talented, beautiful but clearly bonkers actress Uma Thurman (38). It would also have been the 109th birthday of Duke Ellington had he not joined the great jazz band in the sky in 1974.
