Old Tom Morris: 'I want a tache like Alexis Noel James IV...'

On this day in 1861 that Old Tom Morris won his first Open Championship at Prestwick Golf Club. A true pioneer of professional golf, Old Tom was
born in St.Andrews on June 16, 1821, and plied his trade playing, as a course designer and he even had a bit of time to dabble in club-making.

He ended up winning four Opens and held the record for the largest margin of victory in a major (13 strokes) in the 1862 Open, a record that stood until some fella called Tiger won the 2000 US Open by 15 shots.

Elsewhere, on this day in 1976,  J.C Snead won the Anheuser-Busch Classic by two strokes over Gibby Gilbert and Johnny Miller with a 14-under-par 274. Jesse Carlyle Snead was born in Virginia in 1940. And before you ask, yes, he was related to the legendary Sam Snead, his nephew if you must know....

Meanwhile, in 1988, Ben Johnson was stripped of his 100m gold medal after failing a drug test. His inability to tell the judges whether Mitsubishis or Mickey Mouses were better was deemed as particularly harsh by many.

And it's Cosme Argerich! as they say in Buenos Aires, to, grunting tennis star Serena Williams (27), underachiever Michael Ballack (32) and horse-faced, ex horse addict Will Self (47) and the lovely Emma Rigby from Hollyoaks (19).
