I was lucky enough to take a peak into Poults' bag, getting myself a proper look at the sticks he used last week at Royal Birkdale. His Cobra Speed Pro S driver really turned my lights on, as did his sleek Cobra hand grind irons and custom Titleist Scotty Cameron wedges.

Dear Mum,

Well, if you can't beat 'em join 'em. After packing what's left of the tent (bits of it should land somewhere in Cheshire by the middle of next week), I headed off to Birkdale to watch my mate Norman and some Irish bloke called Porridge who walks like a farm labourer and wears his teeth on the outside of his face.

Then there was this other fella called Poults. He's like Nicholas Lyndhurst crossed with Danny Dyer - flash and awkward is a funny combination, but he got everyone going and once my mate Norman looked like he was out of the picture I was all for him.

It even turned out nice again, even if it was blowing a hoolie (what does that word mean, by the way?). I'm now down to the last three layers of skin on my face. I'll have to undergo some kind of regeneration treatment when I get home.

That Porridge bloke won again in the end, but someone told me he doesn't drink and that last year he filled this old jug they give away as first prize with ladybirds. What kind of sicko does that?! A night on the Sambucas will sort him right out.

I've got this golf bug good and proper now. Reckon I might even go to Turnberry next year. Scotland gets great weather in July, right?

Padraig Harrington produced a majestic final round of 69 to win his second Open title in as many years. The Irishman posted two birdies and an eagle on the back nine to win by four shot over Ian Poulters, who also finished his campaign with a 69.

Greg Norman, who started the day two shots clear, could only manage a 77, tying for third with Sweden's Henrik Stenson. Come back later and we'll have plenty more news from the final day at Royal Birkdale...

Dear Mum,

Flippin' heck! Here I am again at the golf. They must put something seriously addictive in those fish and chips (that'll explain why they cost £7 a pop). Started off the day looking for Pleasureland, Southport's answer to Blackpool Pleasure Beach amusement park and the wind tore the tourist pamphlet out of my hand and next thing you know I'm at Birkdale again. Still, at least it didn't rain for a change.

Thinking of investing in a couple of wind turbines - there's got to be some money in that caper. Saw my mate Norman playing again - still don't know his surname and every time I asked one of the punters they just looked at me funny.

Went for the rastaman hat look with the woolly hat over the baseball hat, but clearly golf fashion is a fickle business as I was the only one who did. That lad Poulter's got the pulses racing with his funny trousers, but I'm not having none of that salmon pink malarkey.

Really getting into the golf now, though. Hard to shout 'get in the hole' when the ball only goes a hundred yards and you end up with a face full of sand. I watched my mate Norman say it was the best Open ever. He's not bad for an old fella, is he. Might have a pop myself next year.

Dear Mum,

You'd think I might have ventured a few miles along the coast to see The Cavern and Paddy's Wigwam by now, but no, here I am, still in Southport, even though I haven't managed to spot Lee Mack or Miranda Richardson.

There seems to be an invisible hand guiding me to Birkdale ever day. Last night I bumped into this canoodling couple at Rocco's Italian restaurant - no disrespect, but there's something unsavoury about people over 50 making out in public - and the bloke gave me a couple of passes for the Open. He was called Norman, I think. Anyway, we turn up at the ground or the course or whatever, and check it out if Norman's not out there slashing away at that little white pill. At his age! To be honest, I'm getting a bit sick of being soaked, then blow-dried, then soaked again.

And while I'm on a bitchy tip, the fans could get a little bit more excited. Great for Berghaus anoraks, terrible for giant foam hands with 'We love you Monty, you miserable old sod!' on them, or anything. Whatever happens tomorrow, there's nothing standing between me and a day at New Pleasureland. Check out their Facebook site - it's got 13 fans!
