Billy Burke and George Von Elm scuttled back to the clubhouse at Ohio's Inverness

72 holes, both players were tied on 292 and competed in what turned out to be a marathon

Burke's finest season, in which he reached the semi-finals of the PGA Championship,
won four professional tour events and appeared on the Ryder Cup team, where he boasted
a perfect record of two for two.

12 years later in 1943, a New York City golf professional was arrested for operating
a gambling game in which golfers tried to win a new ball after giving up an old one.
Unlike us, he was clearly unaware that golf

In a dusty bullring, on this day in 1947, Manolete, the greatest bullfighter in history,
died after being gored in the leg by his fifth bull of the day. Rising to prominence
after the Spanish Civil War, he excelled at the kill and was famous for standing close
to the bull and performing five passes in succession without moving out of the way.
In response to his death, General Franco ordered three days of national mourning,
with only funeral dirges heard on the radio.

Oh yeah, and it's also American Independence Day.

it up, expect him to be there or thereabouts on Sunday afternoon. Put a fiver on him
for an each-way finish...
Kevin Streelman
Only chosen Streelman on the basis that the odds on him are so good, and that he's
played really solidly in his last two starts, finsihing tied 12th last week at 14
under, and tied 10th on 12 under the week before at the Travelers Championship.I'm
thinking a fiver on a top ten place..

Babe Zaharias: 'The Mafia photoshoot's on the other hole, mate...'
<ahref="http: www.ingolfwetrust.com="" golf-central="" 2008="" 06="" 26="" on+this+day+in+history+babe+is+born.aspx="">
It was on this day in 1954 that Babe
Zaharias won the US Women's Open at Salem CC, Massachusetts. 'Big deal,' we hear
you ask. 'She's won loads of those, hasn't she?' Well, yes, she has, but this one
was a wee bit special, because it was her first US Open after coming back from cancer
surgery.

Not only did Babe win, she won it in style, finishing with a 291 total for 72... an
incredible 12 strokes ahead of Betty Hicks in secind place. 'My prayers have been
answered,' said Babe after hoisting the trophy for the third time. Other women to
win the US Open on this day include Betsy Rawls (1957), Carol Mann (1965) and Sandra
Spuzich (1966)... but nobody comes close to Babe.

On a terrible day for birds, today in 1844, the last pair of Great Auks were killed.
The only of the Auk family to reach modern times, they were hunted from the birth
of time for their eggs and fur. A person buried at the Maritime Archaic site in Newfoundland,
was found to have been buried in a suit made for 200 Auk skins, with their heads left
on for decoration. They're better off out of it...
There's still great value to be had on Redditch's finest, which is a little bit of
a suprise considering the good form he's shown in the past few weeks. Not only has
he already won on tour this year at the Alfred Dunhill Championships, Bickerton's
been playing well recently, tying for third at the BMW International Open and finishing
tied seventh at the Open De France. Worth an each way...
The London GC, venue for this week's tournament, is owned by Mallorcan real estate

Colin Montgomerie's got a new set of irons in the bag, which have been weighted specifically

London Club's Heritage Course was designed by the one and only, Jack Nicklaus. Designed
by the Golden Bear in 1994, the course plays 7,208 yards from the championship tees,
with water coming into play on six holes. The fairways have been narrowed for the
week, with the rough set at 75mm and the greens measuring 10 1/2 on the stimpmeter.
Expect low scoring this week, with all par fives reachable in two with a drive and

holes during practice.
George Duncan: 'This one will go down a treat in the December shot of my calendar...'

It was on this day in 1920, that George Duncan produced the greatest
comeback in Open history. Born in Methlocks, Scotland, Duncan initially worked as
a carpenter's apprentice, before turning down the opportunity to play professional
football for Aberdeen to become a professional golfer.

In the first post-war championship, held at Royal Cinque Ports, Duncan had opened
with a pair of 80s. Duncan trailed leader, Abe Mitchell, by 13 strokes at the
halfway point. After using a new driver that he bought at the Championship Exhibition
of Golf Equipment , Duncan played himself back into contention with a fine 71.

Heading into the final round, Duncan trailed leader Len Holland by three strokes,
and after a superb 72, he watched everyone around him crumble. Only Sandy Herd had
a realistic chance of catching him, but after a disastrous 16th hole, Duncan captured
what would be his only major title.

On the south bank of the Danube, on this day in 251, the Goths defeated the Romans
in the Battle of Abrittus. Led by King Cniva, the Goths hammered the Romans, with

Led by King Cniva, the Goths hammered the Romans, with
the battle culminating in the deaths of Roman Emperors Decius and his son Herennius
Etruscus, who were the first Emperors to die in battle with a foreign enemy.

So it's a gentle San leaz quiet lo! as they say in Taiwan to two-time PGA Tour winner,
Mike 'Radar' Reid, (54), Dan 'where is he now' Akroyd (56), Carl 'hang your head in

Crooked knee or not, he just can't stay out of the limelight, can he? Tell the media
to bog off... take a break Tiger, it's the least you deserve. You don't want to? Fair
enough. So what's the latest on Tiger Woods, then? Well, after speaking to the media
for the first time since his knee surgery, we now know that he's got to wear to a
full, straight knee brace and will be on crutches for at least three weeks.

Tiger's still unsure as to when he'll be back ripping it off the tee and winning trophies,
however. 'I really don't know. We'll have to see how this thing heals and everyone
heals at a different rate.' It's only when Woods starts the rehab process that we'll
get a rough idea of when he'll be good to go again. Until then, Phil Mickelson and
the rest of the guys on tour can sleep comfortably at night... and IGWT can carry
on putting his face on funny photos.

A final round 67 was enough to give young Pablo Larrazabal his maiden
European Tour title, finishing on 15 under par, four strokes clear of Colin Montgomerie
in second place.

It was only five years ago that the 25-year-old Spanish rookie was on his brother's
bag at the Open de France, but a fine display of golf over four days gave him a thouroughly
deserved victory. He may be an unkown, but you've got to give props to Pablo, who
never looked back after an opening round of 65, and made a gutsy decision to play
the whole week sans (that's French for 'without.' Clever, eh?) a driver.

Larrazabal will probably have to get a new pair of golf shoes, though, after he was
thrown into the lake on the 18th hole. That won't be much of a problem, what with
a winner's cheque worth €666,660.

Four strokes behind Larrazabal on 11 under was Colin Montgomerie, with Soren Hansen
finishing outright third on ten under. It says a lot about Pablo's game, however,
that Monty and Hansen both shot four rounds in the 60s and still finished quite a
bit off the pace.

Oh, and just to remind you, we picked Hansen to win, so that's yet another cheeky
little each way earner to put in the bank...

With petrol prices so ridiculously high, city commissioners in Sandusky, Ohio, have
agreed to let certain types of golf carts on city streets as of July 23rd. Carts will
need to pass a safety inspection before they hit the roads, and vehicles deemed road
worthy will be given a sticker of approval. So that's one city down, a few million

A quintuple-bogey 9 on the par-four ninth during the first round of the US Women's

Michelle. C'mon, I think we all know golf isn't the sport for you...
3. Hygiene standards aren't what they used to be...
... Especially at Arrowhead GC, Illinois, where a virus at the club’s restaurant sickened
about 40 employees and 60 members. A state lab identified the illness as a norovirus,
which is highly contagious and could have been brought into the restaurant by anyone.
The illness caused nausea and other flulike symptoms for about 24 hours. You’d imagine
members will be taking a packed lunch to nibble on-course in the future…
4. Golf and strippers don't mix
Ever heard the one about a kid's golf tournament clashing with a strip club golfing
event? Neither had we until we heard about a scheduling cock-up that saw a Junior
Golf Association tournament in Colorado clash with a Shotgun Willie's Charity golf
event. It's probably the only golf course in the world that you'll see 7 to 12 year
old kids mixing it with 70 strip club dancers. We're told that nothing inappropriate
happened in front of the children, but at least one parent complained, saying, 'When
I walked into the clubhouse to look for my girls, I saw a woman straddling a male
at a dining table.'
5. Golf isn’t a sport, apparently
Why is it that people feel the need to question golf’s status as a sport? Take columnist
Michael Lewis, for example, who argues that golf isn’t a sport because the ‘rich,
important people’ who play it ‘often lack athletic ability, and… are also fat and
physically lazy.’ I'm sure John Daly would have something to say about that...
6. Crime and golf don’t mix (part 459)
Try telling that to 31-year-old golf tournament volunteer, Jason Osborne, who was
arrested at the Travelers Championship for driving a golf cart into a parked car…
and leaving the scene. Jason, you’ve brought shame to the name of golf, but more importantly,
on the name of the golf cart.
7. Sean Connery loves his golf
We love him for lending his suave, ultra-sexy voice to a new film promoting Scotland

We love him for lending his suave, ultra-sexy voice to a new film promoting Scotland
as the home of golf, but we’re not pleased about the fact he’s given his support to
Donald Trump’s £1bn golf resort in Aberdeenshire.

It was on this day in 1924 that Walter Hagen won his second
British Open at Hoylake by one stroke over Englishman, Ernest Whitcombe. Hagen's maiden
Open victory came two years earlier at Royal St George's by one stroke, that time
at the expense of fellow American, Jim Barnes. On both occasions, Hagen pocketed £75
for his efforts.

Hagen's win at Hoylake sparked a ten-year domination by the Americans in the tournament,
with Hagen getting his hands on the Claret Jug a further two times in 1929 and 1930.
Surprisingly, Hagen's debut Open performance in 1920 at Royal Cinque Ports turned
out to be a complete nightmare.

Hagen's lofted trajectory was no match for the barren, wind-swept and bunker-filled
course, and despite teeing up full of confidence on the first day, Hagen finished
with a first round 83 and finished the second day's play in last place. As we now
know, however, Hagen had the last laugh eventually.

Out in the Baltics, on this day in 1709, Peter the Great defeated King Charles Xll

He was so obsessed with this policy that he forced all courtiers, state officials
