'I think I've found a crack in it'

Was it a good finish?: Ye cuid hae bund me wi a strae.
Does that mean a Scotsman won?: Oh yes. Marc Warren beat Simon Wakefield  in a playoff, birdieing the 18th the second time round for his second European Tour title.
And the first was?: The Scandinavian Masters in 2006, when he beat Robert Karlsson, in a playoff oddly enough.
What’s the story then?: Warren carded nine birdies and five bogeys in an action-packed final round 69 and had to hole a nasty eight foot putt for a birdie in regulation play to get into the play-off at 12-under, having dropped a shot at the 17th.
I read that Warren’s manager, Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler offered him the advise to raise nae mair deils nor ye can lig?
What was he on about?: Basically, he told him to play safe and take it from there.
Fat chance. Is Chubby Scottish then?: No, he’s from Bolton.
Any other wild-haired men with the Saltire tattooed on their faces figure in the final shake-up?: Steven O’Hara finished a creditable tied 7th at 9-under and Monty came tied 9th at 8-under. Our favourite Oli Fisher clambered up the leaderboard to from 30th to tied 9th after a 67, bettered only by Martin Erlandsson’s 66 to take him from tied 15th to tied 3rd.
Any other news to report?: Darren Clarke had a pop at the choice of The PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles as the venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup. "There's only been one Ryder Cup in Scotland,” he said, “and then they choose a course like this one. There are even two better ones here at Gleneagles - it's beyond my comprehension."
What did Monty say?: As tournament chairman at this event he offered a diplomatic defence. “Nivver miscaw a Gordon i the raws o Strathbogie,” he countered.
Did he?: No, he said it was a “fantastic venue.”

'I quite fancy Swansea City, actually...'

OK,
what’s the scoop?: Aaron Baddeley, Rich Beem and Mike Weir share the lead at 9-under.
That’s all well and good, but what we want to know is which big names missed the cut: You really are all heart.
Just get on with it…: OK. Will Retief Goosen, Davis Love III, Shaun Micheel, JJ Henry, Chris DiMarco, Tim Herron and JB Holmes do ya?
Where does that leave them in FedExCup terms?:
Well?: Dunno.
What do you mean? Aren’t you supposed to know this kind of stuff?: I was never that good at maths. All I know is that the top 30 players for a billion dollars and a big hat or something in a couple of weeks… Just read more here and see if you can work it out for yourself.
Thanks a bundle. What happened to The Holy Trinity, by the way?: Nobody told me The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost were playing here...
I meant Tiger, Phil and Vijay, doufus: I knew that. They ended up a combined 19-under (Tiger and Mickelson shot 64 and Vijay stopped talk of a record three missed cuts in a row with a 66).
And your money is on..? Phil Mickelson (tied 4th), Rory Sabbatini (tied 8th) and Mark Calcavecchia (tied 58th).
So you might find some money in your bin for change?: We’ve already spent in on masonry paint and a case of WKD.

'Take that, Japan...'

Byron Nelson and Sam Snead battled it out for the 1940 PGA Championship at the Hershey Country Club in Pennsylvania. Nelson won, 1-up, to earn his second Major championship.

On this day in 1945, Japanese officials signed the act of unconditional surrender, finally ending World War II.
In the presence of 50 Allied generals and other officials, the Japanese envoys boarded the American battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay to sign the surrender document. Within half-an-hour, a convoy of 42 US ships entered Tokyo Bay and landed 13,000 American troops.

Meanwhile, it’s Merouane Zemmama! as they say in Edinburgh to foxy actress Salma Hayek (41), pugnacious tennis player Jimmy Connors (55) and slack-jawed acting bloke Keanu Reeves (43).

Wakefield at last month's Ministry of Silly Walks Classic

Simon Wakefield remains at the top of the pile despite a double bogey at the third and two other bogeys which led him to a scrambled, hard-fought, even par round of 73. He joined the clubhouse leader and young Sven Goran Eriksson lookalike, Frederik Andersson Hed, who had carded an excellent five under round of 66 to take him to minus nine for the tournament.

Mark 'Rabbit' Warren is still in the hunt at eight under, despite a dog of a round in which he shot two double bogeys and a bogey. Thomas 'Chevy to the' Levet must have spent a vertigo inducing night at the top of Ben Nevis as he struggled to a 76, three shots behind the leaders.

Of the remaining IGWT tips, Alistair 'Bruce' Forsyth and Colin 'Field Marshall' Montgomerie are well placed to bolster the Paddy Power account which is currently looking about as healthy as Amy Winehouse. The Championship Chairman lies at five under while Brucie is tied fourth at seven under.

This is even more uncomfortable than it looks

Colombia's finest, Camilo 'Viva' Villegas, played like he had been sampling some of his country's famous crop, with a personal best, first round of 63, to take him to the top of the leaderboard at the end of day one. Despite carding an eight under score, he narrowly missed an eagle opportunity at the 17th and felt that one or two more putts might have dropped.

Canada's Mike 'Tyne and' Weir and Ryan 'Roger' Moore of the U.S of A both posted a very respectable 65 to take them to tied second. Heath 'Mrs' Slocum shot a five under score of 65 to take a share of third place along with several others whose names didn't lend themselves to funny nicknames.

The big three of Woods, Mickelson and Singh shot a combined three over par to which Tiger contributed plus one(double bogey fourth hole), Vijay plus three (four putt, double bogey on the first) with IGWT pick Phil slightly arresting the slide with a minus one.

Of the other InGolfWeTrust tips, Mark Calcavecchia was a disappointing one over, while Rory Sabbatini shot a more encouraging minus three 68, to place him at tied 17th but nothing to worry the bookies yet.
