1899

The year that the Western Open was founded. It was the third oldest tournament in the World after the British Open (1860) and The U.S Open (1895.) Today marks the start its revamped format as the BMW Championship.

"OK, 3 plus 5, plus 5 is...Shoot, where's that calculator?"

Less than a month after incorrectly filling in Sergio Garcia's scorecard at the USPGA, Boo Weekley done did it again. At Southern Hills, his mistake led to Sergio being disqualified after the Spaniard failed to notice Weekley's error. This time, at the Deutsche Bank, he was a bit more alert and noticed the gaffe before signing the card.

"I fouled it up again," Weekley said while chewing on a chicken leg and firing a pistol in the air. "I don't know what it is about him, I keep messin' up. It's aggravating."  Not half as aggravating as it is for Garcia, Boo.

"They're tipping ME?"

Last week's result was truly amazing. No, not Phil Mickelson winning, but rather IGWT correctly predicting that he would. OK, so he is ranked number two in the world, so it was hardly sticking our neck out, but a win's a win. This week we're plumping for everyone's favourite mouthy South African, Rory Sabbatini, the quiet so far in the FedEx, Jim Furyk and the long-shot Robert Allenby.

Rory Sabbatini @ 25/1

We keep tipping him and he keeps falling just short. Was tied sixth last week and third the week before. If we didn't pick him it would be like choosing the same lottery numbers each week then not buying a ticket...kinda.

Jim Furyk @ 16/1

Tied 25th and tied 55th have been disappointing playoff results so far for the World number three. He started the FedEx at third place in the standings but has now dropped to seventh. If he is to have a chance of winning the cup, he'll need a solid performance here.

Robert Allenby @ 50/1

Despite a generally poor Summer, he finished eighth last week with an excellent 67 in his final round. Allenby won here before and has consistently played well at Cog Hill.

"Is that your lost ball?"
"No. It's just the way my trousers hang..."

On this day, in 1981, Jay Haas won the B.C Open by three strokes over Tom Kite with a 14-under-par 270.

Jay Dean Haas was born in 1953 in Missouri and in his youth was a member of Golf World's greatest ever college team along with Curtis Strange and Bob Byman. He turned pro in 1976 and won nine PGA Tour events between 1978 and 1993. He holds the record for the most PGA cuts ever made with 592. Jay played in three Ryder Cups, the third coming in 2004 after a resurgence in his career. Since then he has been a prolific winner on the Champions Tour, topping the money list in 2006.

Also on this day, in 1522, The Victoria returned to Spain, becoming the first ship to circumnavigate the world and bringing with it a precious cargo of souvenirs. Scholars estimate that over 100 different keyrings were presented to the King of Spain that day.

Meanwhile, in 1997, Princess Diana's funeral attracted an unbelievable television audience of 2.5 billion. Almost half of the world's population.

And it's Abd Al Qadir! As they say in Algeria, to;  Everton defender Joseph Yobo (27) and crap British tennis players Tim Henman (33) and Greg Rusedski (34). It was also on this day, in 1998, that the clapperboard came down on legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa at the age of 78.
