Nancy would often swap trophies for icy replicas

On this day, in 1969, a 12 year old Nancy Lopez won the New Mexico Women's Amateur, crushing 23 year old Mary Bryan 10 and 8 in the final match.

Nancy Lopez was born in California in 1957 and has enjoyed one of the most successful careers ever in women's golf. In her rookie season she won nine LPGA events and was named Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. In total she has 48 LPGA wins to her name and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1987 at the age of 30.

Also on this day, in 1949, the first episode of Road Runner was aired, The Fast and The Furry-ous. Vin Diesel starred in a popular cinema remake some years later.

Meanwhile, in 1955, Juan Peron is deposed as leader of Argentina, probably for all that singing.

And it's Eemil Sillanpää! As they say in Finland, to;  Radio Two favourite Katie Melua (23), actress turned poker player Jennifer Tilly (49) and big Nev, Neville Southall (49.) Today was also the day, that in 1977,  Marc Bolan died in a car crash.

'For once, we're not saying anything...'

The women's golf tours are intent on popularising the game in any way it can. Sex sells, but there are limits and Nikki Garrett is suing the Australian edition of men's mag Zoo, claiming the lads' mag made her out to be a prostitute. The magazine published a picture of a scantily clad Garrett originally taken for the Women of Professional Golf calendar, accompanied by a caption of a sexual nature. Garrett is suing for defamation and breach of copyright.

'Nice day for it...'

Europe battled to share the spoils on Day Two. They trail the US by a point, but lead in three of the four fourballs matches that remain unfinished due to a two-hour weather delay.

Second day foursomes:
Maria Hjorth and Gwladys Nocera (Europe) halved with Sherri Steinhauer and Laura Diaz (USA)
Sophie Gustafson and Suzann Pettersen (Europe) halved with Paula Creamer and Juli Inkster (USA)
Iben Tinning and Bettina Hauert (Europe) lost to Pat Hurst and Angela Stanford (USA) 4&2
Catriona Matthew and Annika Sorenstam (Europe) beat Nicole Castrale and Cristie Kerr (USA) one hole

Score: Europe 5.5 United Sates 6.5

'God I'm good...'

Give it to me fast and hard: Pardon me?
The golf...: Oh, right. Tiger Woods leads by three shots at 13-under after an oddly disappointing second-round 63.
A disappointing 63? Are you having a laugh?: I know, it just shows how much he’s in charge. After a 70 foot eagle putt on the 9th hole he made the turn in an incredible 28 – his lowest nine-hole score in a PGA Tour event. It took him another five holes to card his next birdie.
He’s crap isn’t he: I know. Rubbish. 27-under par for his last four rounds.
And the supporting cast?: Woody Austin is at 10-under, while Tim Clark, Mark Calchavecchia and Adam Scott are at 9-under. Sergio Garcia and KJ Choi are a shot back, while Padraig Harrington, John Rollins, Stewart Cink and Hunter Mahan are at 7-under.
That’s a helluva leaderboard: Merely a procession, if you ask me.
So, is that the FedEx Cup all wrapped up, then?: Technically, Steve Stricker, Phil Mickelson, Rory Sabbatini and KJ Choi all have a chance. If Mickelson, four shots off the lead, wins and Tiger finishes lower than second, then it’s a $10million pension plan in his bin.
Like he needs it…: Would you turn it down?
Only if it was with Northern Rock…: That’s harsh…

Hansen: 'And for my next trick I'll bogey the 18th...'

Nice day for it: What do you mean by ‘it’?
You know, bit of gardening, bit of golf, bit of rugby…: Rugby, rugby, rugby. What happened to the good old days when it was just golf, golf, golf?
Talking of which…: Fair point. Two Danes share the lead after Round Three at 12-under, Thomas Bjorn carding an impressive 66 and Soren Hansen a 71, which included bogeys on 16, 17 and 18.
Hasn’t Soren Hansen got one of those funny crosses through the ‘o’?: Yes, he has, but I can’t find it. Feel free to let me know…
Who else is in contention?: Alistair Forsyth continued his tournament resurrection with a fabulous 62, to finish on 11-under, with Richard Green, Simon Khan and Lee Westwood a further shot back.
What’s the deal with Forsyth?: Typical golf weirdness. Fifteen shots off the lead after a first round 76, he sacked his caddy Martin Gray on Thursday and started playing the golf his life,
How did the InGolfWeTrust tips get on?: Bernhard Langer is tied seventh at 9-under, Nick Dougherty is tied 14th at 6-under and Monty is tied 20th at 5-under.
All nicely set up for the final day...: You betcha. With 18 golfers within six shots off the lead, it’s going to be a busy day for the people operating the leaderboard.
Any tips?: Samoa to beat Tonga, Canada to overcome Fiji and France to blow Namibia away.
I meant the golf…: Oh. Keep an eye out for Niclas Fasth and Richard Sterne.
Cheers: You’re very welcome.
