"Yes Tony! They have those pink slacks in stock that we had our eye on"

On this day, in 1987, Europe won the Ryder Cup with a 15-13 victory at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The win was particularly historic as it marked the first time that the USA had been beaten on American soil in the Ryder Cup, a record spanning 60 years and 13 matches.

Also on this day, in 1930, Bobby Jones won the US Amateur Championships to secure the grand slam of golf, which at that time, consisted of The British and American Opens and the US Amateur Championships.

Meanwhile, in 1590, Pope Urban dies after 13 days in charge, making him not only the shortest serving pope ever but also the pope with the coolest name ever.

Fast forward to 1777 and Lancaster, Pennsylvania is made capital of the USA or one day only... for some reason.

And it's Grazia Deledda! As they say in Sardinia, to; whiny Canadian Avril Lavigne (23), flouncy Italian footballer stereotype, Francesco Totti (31) and Trainspotting author Irving Welsh (46). Today was also the day that in 1700, Pope Innocent XII continued the fashion for Popes dying on this day.

'I love the smell of wet chinos in the morning...'

Make this quick, I’m watching Apocalypse Now:
Lucky bleeder. “Charlie don’t surf” and all that… Although I did hear Francis Ford Coppola originally cast Robert Duvall as a golf-crazy Lieutenant who cleared entire villages with napalm so he could play pitch & putt.
Really?: No, I just made it up.
Aren't you clever. So what happened then?: Nobody went mental or got killed for a start. Europe did give the GB & Ireland team a gentle roughing up, though, going into Day Two with a 3-2 lead.
And the story was...?: Plenty of talk about ‘dovetailing nicely’, no mention of Paul McGinley and a nice birdie putt from Graeme ‘Quiet Before The’ Storm on 18 to make sure GB & Ireland stay in touch.
Can I ask a philosophical question?: If you must.
Why is it I don’t really care who wins?: Because you’re a true European, thanks to the glory of golf.
Either that or I’m too worried about whether Fiji will beat Wales on Saturday: Fair point…

Faldo leaves Seve in no doubt as to which way he thinks the trophy is going...

"Have you heard the one about the caddy and the laxative sandwich?"

On September 3rd this year, the inaugural Trilby Tour was played at Stoke Park. The brainchild of Savile Row tailor and golf outfitter William Hunt, the Trilby Tour is set to become one of the premier amateur events in the country.

William devised the competition after playing a round with Dave Novell, a club pro at Stoke Park. “After 8 or 9 holes, Dave was 6-under, so I turned to him and asked why he wasn't on the Tour instead of playing here with me. 'Got no money' came the reply. I get asked all the time for sponsorship but I think – 'what's the point, you aren't winning anything' – so then I thought, if someone like Dave wins the sponsorship for themself, I'm starting off with a winner.”

The concept was in place; William decided to give up-and-coming pros who weren't quite at Europro Tour level, a tournament that looks and feels like a real tournament with sponsorship money plus a car for a year for the winner. Throw into the mix William's inimitable sense of style, (he chose to provide each competitor with tailored Hunt gear) and the result was the Trilby Tour.

With the stately Stoke Park providing a stunning venue and the William Hunt clothing ensuring that the players all looked sharper than a lemon flavoured tack, the event was visually stunning. Make sure you tune into Sky Sports Xtra on 1st October, 8pm to have a look for yourself.
