'Don't worry about that farmer comment, Finchy, I'll get one of my boys to take their server down later...'

So did Finch pinch it, or Bowditch breeze it?: The Englishman, Finch, won his first European Tour title just a few weeks after keeping his tour card with a top 10 spot in Mallorca, his last event of the season.
Crikey, good work, farmer-boy: Physically, there is a touch of the agricultural about him, you’re right – 6ft 2 inches, 14 ½ stone, ruddy complexion…
And he’s from Hull…: Yes, he is. What’s that got to do with anything, though?
Dunno, it just seems like one of those kind of places, like Lincoln…: It’s more seafaring than agricultural, but we’ll take that ill-informed piece of social stereotyping and move on. He was six shots clear after the front nine, before chucking in bogeys on 12, 14 and 17.
What happened to Bowditch and Sheehan?: They ended up in a tie for second place after Paul Sheehan carded a solid 69 and Steven Bowditch had a more eventful 72, chucking in five bogeys before two birdies and an eagle on 17.
No miracles from Peter Fowler, then…: Nah… . After his course record 62 a more a last round 73 saw him drop from third to eighth place.
Any other honourary mentions?: Without a doubt – lefty Kiwi ledge Bob Charles played his best golf for a decade, carding 75,68, 71 and 70 to end up tied 23rd.
Good work Charlo: And how did your tip, Oli Fisher get on?: He shot a last round 69 to finish tied 9th with Matthew ‘Iron, Lion in’ Zions.
I’ve missed those nicknames…: I still like to throw one in now and again, just to keep you interested…

Steve Scott: 'Gotta get to the 19th hole! ...'

On this day in 1982, Olympic distance runner Steve Scott set the record for the fastest round of golf on a regulation course, speeding around 18 holes at Dad Miller Golf Course in Anaheim, California in 29 minutes, 33.05 seconds.

A world-class miler who held the American 1500-meter record for 25 years until this year, Scott would have been the favourite for the Olympic gold in the mile in 1980 had the Americans not boycotted the Moscow Games. He's best known for winning the silver in 1500 in the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983, and running 136 sub-4-minute miles in his career, more than any other runner in history.

Scott, now 51, is also a pretty good golfer. So how did his attack on the speed golf record go back in '82 ...?

Merry Mex: 'Maybe they'll think I'm a funny guy now ...'

On this day in 1939, in Dallas, Texas, a future winner of six major titles and one of golf's greatest rags-to-riches stories, was born: Lee Buck Trevino.

Growing up poor in a Mexican-American family, Trevino started picking cotton at the age of five. Golf never entered his horizon until he got a job at age eight as a caddy at a local gollf course, and between caddying and working as a shoeshine boy, Trevino earned $30 a week.

But after work, Trevino honed his own game, using clubs that had been lost and left behind by paying members. By hitting 300 balls a day in his spare time, he was good enough to start hustling other golfers for money before, at age 17, the directionless youth joined the US Marines. Four years later, Trevino started working as a club pro in El Paso, Texas, and by 1967, at age 28, his game was finally ready for the PGA Tour. And what an arrival he made ...

Richard Finch: The abominable linksman

What news from the golf links?: A day for low scores saw the course record beaten twice and Englishman Richard Finch end up on top of the leaderboard, going into the last round at 14-under, three shots clear of Steven Bowditch.
Did Finch beat the course record?: He did, with a 64, but his achievement was eclipsed by Peter Fowler.
What, the veteran Aussie blacked out the sun?: No, 14 years after he won the New Zealand Open he shot an amazing 62 to end the day in third place, just four shots off the lead.
Who else is in the hunt?: Ewan Porter, Rick Kulakz and Paul Sheehan are at 8-under, but the clever money is on either Finch, Bowditch or Fowler.
I thought the smart money was on Oli Fisher?: No, that was the stupid money. Oli’s tied 11th, nine shots back.
