'Show us your pecs, big boy': Frank Stranahanth drives from the first tee during Open qualifying in Sandwich.

On this day in 1948 amateur Frank Stranahan won the Miami Open. How quaint you might think, an amateur winning a professional tournament. But that’s not the half of it. Stranahan remains one of the strangest stories in golf history ...

Whatever you do, don't buy any giant oversized foam drivers from a guy who looks like Jesper Parnevik on the internet, OK? ...

Two people were arrested on Tuesday evening in North Carolina and charged with possessing counterfeit golf goods with intent to sell. The raid was made police using information supplied by Acushnet, manufacturers of Titleist, FootJoy and Cobra equipment.

Three thousand fake items were seized in China following raids on four counterfeit factories last August. The problem is such that the US Golf Manufacturers Anti-Counterfeiting Working Group (featuring Acushnet, Callaway Golf, Cleveland Golf, Nike Golf, PING and TaylorMade) is working overtime to protect itself from fraud.

Auction site eBay is considered the destination of the majority of fake clubs. So be careful before you buy…

Tiger was appalled when British boxing fans jeered the Star Spangled Banner...

Tiger Woods hosts the ninth annual Target World Challenge at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California. Tiger heads a strong 16-man field that features half of the world’s top-20 players. The $5.75 million event benefits his Tiger Woods Foundation and has a first prize of $1.35 million. Here’s whom I’m backing to win the loot…

Tiger Woods @ 6/4 with Coral: Current champion Woods has won this event on three occasions, finished runner-up twice and is unsurprisingly a short priced favourite this time around. The newly crowned PGA Tour Player of the year is refreshed after a two-month break from competitive golf and is likely to add to his seven tournament wins here.

Padraig Harrington @ 12/1 with Paddy Power: Harrington has an excellent Sherwood record and is third on the event’s all-time money list. He won in 2002, finished runner-up in 2004 and came third in both 2003 and 2005. His price represents obvious value for a player with a proven tournament record.

Rory Sabbatini @ 20/1 with William Hill: The in-form South African and notorious Tiger-baiter also represents good value. Sabbatini makes his debut in this event following a great year on the PGA Tour where he posted six top three finishes and placed in the play-off standings for the FedExCup.
