Dai Rees, captain of the '57 Great Britain Ryder Cup which beat the US, demonstrates how they used to do the stymie in the good old days ...

On this day, in 1951, a rule which is today considered archaic but was very much a fabric of the game in the first half of the last century, was eliminated from the Rules of Golf: the stymie.

Most golfers born since the 1940s probably wouldn't even know of the stymie, which made golf a heck of a lot more evil and - possibly - a bit more fun.

In singles match play, until 1951, that is, players didn't mark their balls on the green and weren't lifted unless they were laying six inches apart or closer. So, a clever player who was behind on a hole could use a clever putt, and roll his ball in between the hole and his opponent's ball, thereby forcing said opponent to have to putt around or over the ball in the path.

Sound a bit like snooker? ...

'I knew I never should have ... played ... this ... stupid ... damn ... game ... ever again!'

So, how did Tiger look after 10 weeks without playing golf?...: Like he's spent a lot of time with his baby daughter.
Why? Was his golf so bad?...: No, it was great, he just looked like he's spent a lot of time with his baby daughter, that's all.
Explain, please. ...: Well, did you see his temper tantrum on the 18th hole? It was an all-time Tiger tantrum classic.
So, he acted a bit like Sam Alexis then?...: Not even she would dare try to chop the hell out of some poor defenceless underbrush with a golf club.
So the Tiger temper is still there. How's the golf?...: Great. Tiger was absolutely brilliant for 17 holes, until he dunked his approach on the 18th hole into the water. He took a double bogey to finish on 3-under and smashed up an iron.
Who's leading then?...: Jim Furyk's out front now at 4-under, trailed by Tiger, his pal Rory Sabbatini, Zach Johnson and Henrik Stenson at 3-under. But almost anyone can make a move except for poor Monty.
What happened to Monty?...: He might be wishing he skipped this trip, except for the splendid weather. He didn't make a birdie and shot 8-over for an 80.
Ouch. Well I suppose it's bad form to withdraw from an invitional tournament ...: Yep, and it's bad form to act like a 6-month-old child at your own invitational as well ...
Let's hope Monty and Tiger get their acts together ...: We can only hope ...

'I mean, if a guy hits a good shot, I'm gonna say so, even if I hate him. And I like Phil.'

When putting together our biography of our newest Hall of Fame member, Fred Couples, we couldn't resist compiling a list of some of our favourite quotes from the man with the beautiful swing and a way of twisting up sentences like none other ... From the bizarre to the blatantly obvious, there's a good chance of getting a great quote when Freddie Couples is around:

(By the way, Freddie is available as a corporate speaker through the All-American Speakers bureau, but he'll cost you at least $50,000. If you want Freddie for free, you've got to get yourself a press credential). Here then, is the quotable Freddie:

On his putting woes:
I hit the ball and when I make a few of them, I get a little bit of rhythm and I can make a few. Then when I start missing them, they don't go in. ...

Who's that shadowy looking guy walking past all those red numbers? ... Haven't seen him in a while ...

So the Tiger is out of hibernation, for the time being, at least. This week, 15 of the world's top golfers are joining Woods at Sherwood Country Club north of Los Angeles for what is either the end of the Silly Season, or the opening shots of real hostilities to come for 2008, depending how you want to look at it.

Here's our quick and friendly rundown to the tournament of the week, Tiger's Target World Challenge at Sherwood ...

No frogs or hair were harmed in the making of this excellent jacket...

It’s not that we’re needy or greedy, it’s just that the closer we get to Christmas, the more we realise that our nearest and dearest are likely to reach for the nearest pice of golf tat in a panic buy, instead of getting us something we really want - like this Froghair Rain Jacket (£65 / www.coolgolfgear.co.uk / 01204 880149). So what are you waiting for, gran?!
