Grey found out where the beef was when he took on Taft at golf ...

On this day in 1910, the 300-pound US president William Howard Taft threw down the gauntlet to his northern neighbour, Albert Grey, the 4th Earl Grey, and governor-general of Canada, challenging Grey to a golf match to settle North America's "executive championship" over 18 holes and some fine stogies.

The beefy Taft, the 27th US president, was the first man in the Oval Office to admit to the public about his obsession with golf. Taft's match with Grey was slated for later in the summer at the Myopia Hunt Club in Maryland. In the stilted news style of the time, the New York Times reported: "Mr. Taft warned his distinguished opponent that this course was the hardest in the United States, and also boasted that he had made the eighteen holes in less than 100. The Earl was nothing daunted at this, and accepted the challenge forthwith ..."

We want the shoes, we want the shoes, we want the shoes...

Let's face it, when we're not shooting 6-under par off the back tees, we're pulling gnarly moves on our skateboards down Hove lagoon. Well, we would have been once upon a time..

It's the opposite for Eric Koston. One of the best skaters on the planet, he's featured in Tony Hawk Pro Skater games and appeared in Jackass: The Movie. He also loves his golf. Which is why Lakai skate footwear, have produced arguably the coolest golf outfit in recent times.

We've been forever going on about the need for someone to bring skating style to golf. Much as we love our traditional fairway icons - Hagen, Demaret, Chi Chi, Arnie, Player, Sanders, Miller... - as well as the chaps wearing J.Lindeberg and Peak Performance, the skater look is a bit roomier and slouchier - perfect for those of us who first rolled on blue kryptonics back in '78.

Singh: Like Tiger, only not quite as good, but better value.

This week the PGA Tour train stops at the awesome Bay Hill Club & Lodge for the Arnold Palmer Invitational. There's absolutely no value to be had with Tiger (as usual), so take a look at these picks instead.

Vijay Singh @ 22/1: Won here last year? 7th the year before? Runner-up in 2005? And at 22/1, you say? What are you waiting for?
Luke Donald @ 22/1: Unlucky to miss out at The Honda Classic last week, and, like Vijay, has got good previous at Bay Hill.
Vaughn Taylor @ 125/1: Finished third here last year, started 2008 well but has gone off the boil a bit recently. At 125s, however, he's worth at least a small chunk of your gambling stash.

Edfors: Cool like the other side of the pillow. Not bad at golf either...

The Pinx Golf Club in South Korea plays host to the inaugural Ballantine's Championship, so who'll be on the winner's podium come Sunday is anyone's guess. But our guess is as good, if not better, than anyone's...

Johan Edfors @ 22/1: The Swede has shown scintillating form recently, posting four top ten finishes in his six starts on the European Tour in 2008. The writing's on the wall...
Graeme Mcdowell @ 30/1: Had a great year so far has our Graeme, with a string of solid finishes. Expect him to show more of the same this week.
Zane Scotland @ 175/1: A young talent just waiting to burst out of his shell. Capable of moments of brilliance, if anyone deserves a good finish this week it's this affable young fella.

Nobody knew then, but there was no stopping Byron Nelson until August ...

On this day in 1945, Byron Nelson and Jug McSpaden teamed up to win the Miami Four-Ball Championship, beating Denny Shute and Sam Byrd 8&6.

And even though the Miami Four-Ball was a team event, it was an official PGA Tour tournament at the time, which makes Lord Byron's victory all the more significant. Why? Because the victory was the first in Nelson's "unbeatable" string of 11 straight tournament victories - a record which many in golf today still don't think can be broken ...
