Arnold Palmer and Bob Hope: well and truly shafted

This day in 1966 saw Arnold Palmer defeat Gay Brewer to claim his third Tournament of Champions victory at the Stardust Country Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Palmer erased a five stoke deficit on the final day, getting round in 69 whilst Brewer hit a 74, seeing both players carding 283. Palmer won after a three-hole playoff. This was Arnie's 47th from a remarkable 62 PGA Tour victories he recorded during his career.

Davis Love III - much better than Ice Age II (don't ever crack that lame joke again... Ed)

Davis Love III, Justin Leonard and Lucas Glover share the first round lead at Harbour Town with 5-under par scores of 66. There are about a million players within three shots of the lead (OK, it's just 39...), including Stewart Cink, Camilo Villegas, Brian Davis and Nick Dougherty at 4-under. Go Dough!

It's hardly unusual to see half the field spread over six shots, but one of the shortest courses on tour at 6973 yards, Harbour Town may well give us a nail-biting finale on Sunday, with a load of players in contention going down the stretch. That's our theory, anyway.

Babe Zaharias: 'To be honest, I haven't got house space for any more of these...'

Double Olympic gold medalist, All-American basketball player and 41-time LPGA Tour winner Babe Zaharias underwent surgery for colon cancer on this day in 1953. The operation went ahead amidst fears that it would cut short one of the most exciting sporting lives in history.

Michael Lorenzo-Vera: 'I laugh with contempt at your petty ignorance'.

Michael Lorenzo-Vera leads the field after a first round 67 and before you have the sheer audacity to ask 'who the hell is he?', take a moment to study last year's Challenge Tour rankings, look right up to the top and then realise just how limited your knowledge of golf is.

23-year-old Lorenzo-Vera is aiming to be the third French tour winner in Europe on the trot, following wins for Gregory Bourdy and Tomas Levet. He's one shot clear of seven players including China's Li Chao, who is ranked 1261st in the world and InGolfWeTrust tip Zane Scotland.
