Adam Scott: 'That Camilo Villegas thinks he's so cool...'

If you don't already know how pathetically jealous we are of Adam Scott, you will be left in no doubt by the end of this brief summary of the last's day's play at the Byron Nelson.

The seventh win of his PGA Tour career came in the third hole of a playoff with Ryan Moore, who is much better looking than Scott, actually. The acne-ridden Auusie shot a last-round 71 to end up 7-under for the tournament, but had to hole a mammoth putt on the 72nd hole (it wasn't a mammoth's putt, by the way, they're extinct) to take the tournament to extra holes after the chiselled American shot a final round 68.

Those two finished four shots ahead of Bart Bryant at 3-under and a trio at 2-under including Mark Hensby, Carl Pettersson and Nicholas Thompson. No, we don't have the foggiest who is either.

Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia finished tied for 19th place, which is not very exciting. But former burger-flipper Richard Johnson of Wales (who made it on tour through Q-School) shot a blinding last round 65 to finish tied 31st.

Adam Scott is really ugly close up, by the way.

John Daly: Proof that smoking keeps you trim...

A great golfer with an even greater story was born in Carmichael, California on this day in 1966. John Daly will go down in history as one of the unlikeliest Major winners in the modern era, having been ninth reserve prior to winning the 1991 PGA Championship. His 1995 victory in The Open Championship of 1995 was similarly unexpected, following a playoff with Italian Constantino Rocca.

He has three other PGA Tour wins to his name, but that's not the half of it.

Darren Clarke: just another humdrum tournament win, then...

Tense, nervous headache? Best not bother with The European Tour then. Following two French wins on the bounce, we now have a second Irish victory in consecutive weeks.

But it was no romp for Darren Clarke. Can you recall the last 40ft putt you holed to win your Saturday medal? Well, imagine how Darren felt when the 73rd shot of his round dropped to give him his first title in five years.

He finished at 8-under, a shot clear of Robert-Jan Derksen at 7-under, with Robert Dinwiddie enjoying his best finish since graduating from The Challenge tour, sharing third at 5-under with Francesco Molinari and Lin Wen-Tang.

Pre-tournament favourite Henrik Stenson thundered up the leaderboard with a final round 68 to finish in 6th and Martin Kaymer managed an even more impressive leap from tied 39th to tied 7th with a 67. Still not good enough to give The Bet Detective a return on his investment, though...

"Smile! Oh alright, don't then..."

Today’s the day that in 1929 the Great Britain and Ireland captain George Duncan beat the mighty American Walter Hagen in the second Ryder Cup match at Moortown, Leeds. Well, we say ‘beat’ but he absolutely mullered him, 10 & 8. The win helped the Brits to a 7-5 victory and Hagen, golf’s first real showmen, was never the same again.

Rob Brydon during happier times...

Today’s the day that in 1951 the world welcomed the arrival of two-time PGA Tour title winner Mac O’Grady, although he wasn’t a two-time PGA Tour title winner when he was born, obviously. Mind you, he wasn’t called Mac O’Grady either. He was called Phil McGleno and changed his name when he was older, first to Phillip McClelland O’Grady and then to Mac O’Grady. Whatever he was called, he was quite handy at golf.
