Luke Donald: 'Which way to the nearest cheque?'

It's comforting to know that despite not being quite good enough yet to land an elusive Major, some of the top golfing Brits are still managing to pay the bills.

Among the sporting elite, Luke Donald is 55th with £10million, Justin Rose is 71st with £7million, Paul Casey is 77th with £6million and Graeme McDowell is 94th with £5million.

Among the more low-key inclusions with golfing links are Sean Quinn (12th with £3,730million), whose son, Sean Jr, owns The Belfry, foreign exchange dealer Joe Lewis.

Sir Terry Matthews (79th at £950million) owns Ryder Cup 2010 venue The Celtic Manor, while golfing media-mogul Chris Evans somehow gets by at 1621st with a paltry £45million.

Hogan knows best...

It was on this day in 1929 that the golfing powers at the R&A voted against the notion of making the golf ball bigger and lighter, arguing that it would make the game too difficult. In typical Yank fashion, however, the U.S Golf Association saw things differently and countered the argument based on the growing number of skilled players in the game. Over in Mexico City in 1953, there was further controversy as three players, including defending champion Lloyd Mangrum, withdrew from the Pan American Open when they learnt Ben Hogan received a $5,000 guarantee, no matter where he finished. Hogan being Hogan and all that, he only went on to win the bloody thing.

Clarke: So a little bit of make-up girls, and you're sure I can fall back on trolley-dollying if golf doesn't work out?

Nearly managed a cheeky each way with Kaymer last week, but that didn’t materialise so I was left with nothing. The European Tour rolls into Spain this week, so grab a bottle of Rioja, a plate of paella and put your pesetas on these lads…

Darren Clarke @ 25/1: got an emotional win under his belt last week in Shanghai and will no doubt be eager to put in another good performance and get himself back into the Ryder Cup frame. Let’s hope he can continue to ride on the crest of this wave and bag us some cash.

Jose Manuel Lara @ 28/1: the token homegrown talent pick for the week. Apart from being on home soil, however, Lara’s performed well and has finished strongly in 2008. Definitely worth a fiver.

Miles Tunnicliff @ 60/1: not much reasoning behind this pick, really. Has had a pretty solid year thus far, and a 4th place finish in Portugal (which is kind of similar to Spain) recently is promising. A complete hunch, mind you…

Last Week’s picks

The European Tour
Martin Kaymer (7th)
David Howell (missed cut)
Miguel Angel Jimenez (missed cut)

Hoffman: 66/1, because I'm worth it...

I’ll be the first to admit that last week was an absolute nightmare, but problems on the domestic front meant that the BD’s mind wasn’t fully on the job. So without further ado, here are three fresh pick for you all this week. Keep the faith…

Adam Scott @ 16/1: it’s that damn Adam Scott, he’s so hot right now! He’ll be buzzing after his win at the Byron Nelson last week, and has finished under par here for the past three years, including a third place finish in 2006. Case closed.

Anthony Kim @ 50/1: it took all my migh
t not to go with him last week, so I’ve given into temptation. The force is strong with this one; Kim’s already had a second and third place finish this year as well as two top tens, and you feel that it’s only a matter of time before…

Charley Hoffman @ 66/1: if ever a hairdo deserved to win a PGA event, then Charley Hoffman’s wavy blonde Barbie doll look would be the most worthy. That not being the case, a good price and a string of solid finishes in 2008 makes him a tasty pick for the week.

Last week’s tips:

The PGA Tour
Ian Poulter (tied 35th)
Trevor Immelman (missed cut)
Fredrik Jacobson (missed cut)

Listen mate, the rule book says play it as it lies...

It was one of the hardest decisions we’ve ever had to make here at In Golf We Trust, which just goes to show how complicated our lives are. After six hours of heated debate, we've settled for the fact that it just makes sense to have seven things to learn in a week - one thing for each day of the week- rather than ten as previously posted. Unilke rising fuel costs and falling property prices, you'll still get top value for your dollar, although as you're not actually paying for this unparalleled level of journalistic insight, you're doing OK out of the deal either way. Anyway, back to business…
