Elder: "Better than me, son? Maybe one day, but I doubt it very much..."

On this day in 1976, pioneering black golfer Lee Elder, defeated Forrest Fezler by one stroke to win the Houston Open, his second of what would be three PGA tour victories. Not so lucky, however, 11 years later in 1987 was Jan Stephenson. Tied for the 54-hole lead at the S&H Classic, Stephenson was injured in an automobile accident and could not compete the next day.

Martin Erlandsson: Quickly noticed that the David Duval style shades were unlucky...

Well, as we didn't predict, Sweden's Martin Erlandsson destroyed Sevilla's Real Club yesterday with a new course record, seven under par 65 to take an early lead at the Open de Espana. The real story of the day, however, and the one we absolutely love, is that of Jordi Garcia. The Spanish youngster swashbuckled his way to a stunning 66 to finish second for the day, but more importantly, looks an apt replacement to Sergio Garcia (who's he, again?). Suffice to say, the Bet Detective's picks didn't get off to the best of starts, but it's still early days...

David Toms: I'll just make the cut and bag another hefty pay cheque...

Believe it or not, Tiger Woods is on top yet again. Hang about, he's not playing this week, is he? So Phil Mickelson must be winning? Well, he's up there in second place after an opening round of 68... one behind David Toms. That's right,  David Toms flew back onto the golfing radar after five under 67, though we fully expect him to have a second round nightmare and quickly fall out of contention. On a brighter note, two of our favourite youngsters- Camillo Villegas and Anthony Kim- are both trudging along nicely under par, and there's a bit of European flavour in the mix following solid opening rounds from Jesper Parnevik and world number two Ian Poulter. Watch this space...

Greg Norman: 'I'll choke you in a minute...'

Today is the day that in 1988 yet another title slipped away from the man who would become known, unfairly, as one of golf’s biggest chokers. This time, it was Curtis Strange who dealt Greg Norman another killer blow, birdying the third extra hole at the Houston Open to record a hat-trick of victories in the event. For Norman, meanwhile, the ignominy of another play-off defeat would live on for another 20 years, often accompanied by pictures of him looking a little gormless in a helmet.
