'Scotland? What's not to like?'

Say what you like about golf, but you can't fault it for sportsmanship. After the US and Great Britain play a draw in the Curtis Cup Matches at Gleneagles on this day in 1936, the British team declines to share possession of the Cup, declaring that it had not won any claim to it. The US had won the Cup in 1934, and thus retained possession of it.

Jack Nicklaus: 'Fancy a game of hangman?'

What a year it was for Jack Nicklaus. He won five PGA Tour events in 1963, including The Masters and The PGA Championship for the first time and on this very day he nailed the first of five Tournament of Champions titles, defeating Tony Lema and Arnold Palmer by five strokes. He ended up winning the grand total of $100, 040 in prize money.

Peter Lawrie: Clearly a fan of Boris Johnson

It's three wins on the trot for an unlikely trio of Irishmen - Darren Clarke, Damien McGrane and now McGrane's room-mate on tour, Peter Lawrie.

Lawrie beat Ignacio Garrido thanks to four birdies in the last six holes of regulation play for an impressive fourth round score of 67. Both players finished at 15-under after Garrido's 72, with Soren Hansen at 14-under and Alfredo Garcia-Heredia, Miguel Angel Jimenez and David Lynn at 13-under.

Lawrie holed a 30-foot putt on the first play-off hole to stay in the game and struck a magical fairway bunker shot at the second play-off hole, while Garrido's approach spun back into the water at the 18th.

Curtis Strange: It's your turn to wear the pink tomorrow, ok?

On this day in 1980, despite blowing a six shot lead in the final round, Curtis Strange managed to keep his composure and beat Lee Trevino to capture the Michelob-Houston Open. Greg Norman also stormed to a seven-stroke victory over Dan Pohl in the 1986 Las Vegas Invitational, finishing an impressive 27-under-par for the 90-hole event.

Jason Bohn: adoped a novel approach with his approach shots

Well, it certainly didn't take long for David Toms to go off the boil, did it? Now at the top of the pile is Jason Bohn, who holds a slender lead at nine under. The secret to his success? Lengthening his putter by a gargantuan one inch, apparently. Anyway, what's really making our mouths water is the fact that Anthony Kim is only one shot behind Bohn... the Bet Detective has already spent the winnings in his mind (a new conservatory if you must know). And it's good to see Villegas in the hunt just four off the pace, but better still, the fact that Paul Goydos is in the chasing pack to add a certain old school flavour to proceedings.
