Francis Ouimet: top gear...

The greatest plucky underdog in the history of golf, Francis Ouimet, was born on this day in 1893. The unknown amateur won the US Open in 1913, beating Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in an 18-hole playoff. In the process he gave American golf the belief that it could beat the world, which it has pretty much been doing ever since – apart from the Ryder Cup, of course.

The 17th at Sawgrass: so well-maintained they mow the carpet

Fair play to The PGA Tour, it's good at getting its message across. There's no chance were going to get confused about the importance of The Players Championship, no question whatsoever that we're likely to think it's any old tournament week. Here's your indispensable guide to the so-called fifth Major.

Ian Poulter: shy and retiring as always

After a third big win of the season last week with Anthony Kim (no, we can't quite believe it either), it's the fifth Major-in-waiting, according to our friends across the water. The Players Championship at The Stadium Course, Sawgrass, is guaranteed to be a doozy, with Tiger absent and a heap of young guns aiming for a spot in the highest echelon of golf.

Our tips:-
Padraig Harrington @ 20/1: he won't always do the business on the biggest stage, but there's a certain consistency in Harrington's game and we loved the way he went about his business at Augusta to bring home the betting bacon for us.
Stephen Ames @ 66/1: he's done it before and although we're also tempted by Retief Goosen at 40/1 and Andres Romero at 75/1, the toothsome Ames gets a piece of our action on an each-way punt.
Ian Poulter @ 110/1: although we can't really see a British winner this year (Luke Donald seems to be the perennial bookies' favourite among The Brits, anyway) we're hoping for a decent place on an each way for Mr Fancy Pants at this irresistible price.

Last week's tips:-

Anthony Kim @ 50/1 (1st place)
Adam Scott @ 16/1 (tied 8th)
Charley Hoffman @ 66/1 (missed cut)

Robert Karlsson: leaf it out, will ya?

While the best play Sawgrass, the rest get a nice weekend in Italy to look forward to. Yes, it's the Methorios Capital Italian Open at the Castello di Tolcinasco Golf  & Country Club in Milan. While the players go golfing, the wives and girlfriends go shopping...

Our tips:-

Nick Dougherty @ 18/1: short odds in a diminished field for one of our regular picks, who we hope will maintain his decent form after the recent passing of his mother. Go Dough boy!
Robert Karlsson @ 20/1: played well at The Masters, but hasn't quite figured on the final day on tour this season, despite being there or thereabouts. Could this be the week?
Raphael Jacquelin @ 35/1: it's his birthday week, the French have performed brilliantly on tour this season and we're hoping for more of the same from one of last season's most consistent performers.

Last week's tips:-

Darren Clarke @ 25/1 (tied 22nd)
Jose Manuel Lara @ 28/1 (tied 32nd)
Miles Tunnicliff @ 60/1 (51st)

Michael Stich wishes he'd stuck to tennis after all...

Unlike the property prices, we've arrested the slide of our 10 Things feature and pretty happy to be stuck on seven. It just seems like a better number all-round. Anyway, here it comes, featuring Peter Lawrie, his namesake Paul, Paula Creamer saying daft things and the fact that all you need in Britain is a bit of sunshine and suddenly every hackers out there getting in the way. Normally it's just us...
