Sergio Garcia: 'Fond? Does that mean you fancy me?'

We either like, dislike or are indifferent to golfers for a number of reasons – some valid and some simply the result of a personal predilection that can’t really be explained by logic. And despite his many tantrums, like kicking his golf shoe towards an official, being fined several times for poor behaviour, spitting in the hole, getting over-enthusiastic at The Ryder Cup or whingeing that he never gets a break after last year’s Open, we have rather a fondness for the young scamp Sergio Garcia.

Jerry Lewis: 'Journeyman plus water equals two...'

Featuring such highlings as... quality will always out; there are people and things that lie – such as physicists – and some that don’t – and this includes certain statistics. And if you can quickly say a sentence that contains the words physicists and statistics, you obviously had a quieter weekend than we did.

Jim Furyk: likes an Eminem karaoke number (strange but true)

Some clichés become clichés because they contain more than a soupcon of truth and James Michael Furyk underlines that with a vengeance. We also commemorate a man called Xenophon, a woman called Florence and Bob Carolgees, along with Spit the Dog. Okay, they weren’t necessarily the funniest double act since Sodom and Gomorrah but you have to admire someone who can build a career out of a dog puppet that spits at people.

Sergio: 'Frankly, I'm as surprised as you lot...'

They were meant for each other - the so-called fifth Major and the nearly man of Major tournament golf. That's a bit harsh, perhaps. And it does glaze over the fact that most people who aren't employed or related to Paul Goydos were happy to see Sergio Garcia win The Players Championship in the first play-off in tournament history, after Goydos's bogey on 18 saw him stumble at the final hole of regulation play.

We couldn't be happier for Sergio (we could if The Bet Detective had put a few quid on Sergio Garcia before the tournament started - Ed), particularly as he had the good grace to thank Tiger for playing his part by not playing the tournament. As it happens, Garcia joins Tiger as the only players to finish runner-up The Players Championship then go on to win the event the following year.

Hennie Otto: 'You can keep your 17th at Sawgrass...'

OK, so Day Three went missing in action just like Day One, but let's face it, we live in Britain and when the sun shines, you've got to get out there...

Anyhoo, a great day for Hennie Otto, who made up for blowing a final day lead a few weeks back in Madeira by keeping his nerve in Italy. He won his first European Tour event with a final 69 for 25-under, a shot clear of Oliver Wilson, who must have given Otto the fright of his life with a fantastic 64.

Robert Karlsson gave The Bet Detective some solace with third at 23-under, while Phil Archer and Marcel Siem tied fourth at 21-under. John Daly shot 67,73,68, 68 to finish tied 23rd.
