Jeev Milkha Singh: 'I meant to hit it here, honest...'

Jeev Milkha Singh ended the day sharing top spot with Australia's Richard Green - the Indian's up-and-down on the final hole leaving him tied on 6-under par. After firing his third shot approach into the bushes and his forth passing the hole by some 40 feet, a 66 looked unlikely. He somehow managed to nail the putt to stay in contention at the top of the leaderboard. Home favourite, Padraig Harrington, attracted huge galleries on his way to a level par 72, The Open champion finishing 4 shots off the lead.

Kenny Perry: slippery when wet
Last Saturday night Kenny Perry was looking forward to the prospect of winning The Players Championship. One behind the leaders, he then shot a traumatic 81 and ended up tied for 15th. He's one of five players including Jonathan Kaye, Ryan Palmer, Jonathan Byrd and Parker McLachlin tied for the lead at the AT&T after a first round 66. With just five of the Top 50 players on tour turning up this week, Perry must fancy his chances. On the downside, David Duval looks like he's heading for a ninth missed cut in a row after a first round 78.

Babe Didrikson-Zaharias: 'leave my girdle out of it, pal'

"Just loosen your girdle and let the ball have it". So spoke Mildred Didrikson-Zaharias, who was quite probably the greatest sportswoman the world has ever seen and on this day in history she picked up one of her many golf titles, to go along with three Olympic gold medals in different sports. John Gummer wasn’t much of a sportsman so we’ll move quickly on to the sainted Laura Davies (well, she should be), the fabulous Jonathan Richman (we've been playing Roadrunner in the office all day) and proto-Paris Hilton Hollywood wastrel, Tori Spelling.

The Cobra Camo Stand Bag - Venomenal!
The bag of choice for every bloodthirsty golfer (we'll have all three, please...)

We've got a bit of a bee in our bonnets about bags for life (it's the supermarket chains' way of making us feel guilty about their rampant profiteering, in case you were wondering), but we'd have these babies from Cobra for keeps, no problem.

The 9-inch cam-style teflon-coated bag has 7-way velour lined elliptical top and 3-way full length dividers, with a new patented Izzo Comfort Swivel double strap. Many of the best bag-manufacturers have dabbled with camo, only to back off from going into full production. Hats off to Cobra for their all-guns-blazing approach, with all three patterns.

Price: £110. For more info, visit our friends at Cobra here.

Ken Venturi: What on earth is going on below the waist?!

As far as we know, screen goddess Rita Hayworth, who died on May 15, never rubbed a brassie for luck in her life or picked a ball out of the hole, and Ken Venturi, who was born on this day, devoted his life to the game but we know who we’d rather look at. There’s also room to mention nylon stockings, nuclear weaponry and the first ever airline stewardess.
