Johnson Wagner at The Players: 'No, I have no idea where it went, either'

Johnson Wagner matched Paul McGinley with a 7-under 63 to take a two-shot lead from Brett Wetterich, with Glen Day and a certain Phil Mickelson lurking ominously a shot further back at 4-under.

Other notables include Alex Cejka, who has endured a miserable few years, at 3-under alongside former burger-flipper and Q-School graduate Richard Johnson, with some bloke called Ian Poulter a further shot back.

No sign of any of the Bet Detective's tips in the leading pack, but at least he didn't back poor Lee Janzen, two-time winner of The US Open in his pomp, who props up the rest of the field after a miserable 80.

Paul McGinley: 'Sixty five? Whatever...'

Paul McGinley shot a bogey free 65 to take the course record and earn him a shot lead at 7-under from form horse Robert Karlsson (although he's clearly of human not equine extraction), with Marcus Fraser and Louis Oosthuizen tied third at 5-under.

Others in the hunt include Garry Houston, Charl Schwartzel, Daniel Vancsik and Simon Wakefield at 4-under. Our fave Nick Dougherty is tied 12th at 2-under, while Bet Detective pick Ross Fisher shot par.

Oddly enough, some of the bigger names had less succesful days - Henrik Stenson (+2), Ernie Els (+3), Retief Goosen and Justin Rose (+4), while our mate Michael Campbell had a stinker (+8). Come on Cambo!

Horton Smith: 'I hate that Dr Seuss...'

It’s not every day that you get the chance to put the first winner of the Masters, porn actress Annabel Chong, Alexander the Great, George Best and Annika Sorenstam in the same few paragraphs, but we’ve managed it. They have almost nothing in common, of course, except this day in history – but that’s enough for us.

Tiger Woods: forced to use a golf club as a walking stick

OK, so the gimpy Big Cat isn't quite ready for his Zimmer frame at the age of 32. But Stuart Matthews has noticed some strange doings in the absence of the injured Tiger Woods. Tiger's young rivals are finally coming out to play, and they've given the tour on the American side of the Pond a much-needed facelift ...

Mark Carnevale: Altogether now: 'pardon me boy...'

Some people pay a lot of money for a damned good thrashing but these ladies are amateur golfers, so they have to receive their beating for free, which they did in the first ever staging of the Curtis Cup – starting a noble tradition of masochism we have been doing our best to uphold ever since. Elsewhere there were bombs, aeroplanes, dastardly deeds and tragedy – Barbara Cartland died too.
