Old Tom Morris: 'What you lookin' at?'

The father of British golf died on this day in 1908 aged 86 from a concussion caused by a fall down a flight of stairs. Old Tom played a role in designing courses across the British Isles, including Muirfield, Prestwick and Carnoustie.

Phil Mickelson: raking it in...

Phil Mickelson is on top of a leaderboard for the first time in a while, after a second round 68 gave him a shot lead at 7-under from Matt Kuchar, Brian Gay and Johnson Wagner (6-under) and a handful at 5-under, including Vaughn Taylor and Stephen Ames.

Carrying five wedges in his bag, Lefty only needed to putt once on 11 of the 18 holes. Geoff Ogilvy shot a Friday best 64, while Jesper Parnevik, Rory Sabbatini, Tom Lehman, Jim Furyk, Chad Campbell and Steve Stricker were among the big names to miss the cut.

The Bet Detective will not be a happy man this weekend...

Paul McGinley: 'No I really do feel sorry for Walter Smith...'

Not a band couple of days for Paul McGinley, all things considered. His team, Celtic, won the Scottish Premier League title against the odds on Thursday night while he set a new low score for 36 holes of this tournament at 131 after a second round 66 gave him a four shot lead at 13-under.

McGinley leads Robert Karlsson and Miles Tunnicliff (9-under), Oliver Wilson, Soren Kjeldsen and Marcus Fraser (8-under) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (7-under).

A notable mention must go to Robert Dinwiddie, who probably thought he'd be spending the weekend cleaning out the barbecue after a first round 78, before he carded a course record 63 to leave him tied for 20th.

Big names to miss the cut include Darren Clarke, Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie (+4), Justin Rose (+5) and poor old Michael Campbell, whose world ranking is now 299 after a pair of 80s.

Sam Snead: a chippy old blighter

Sam Snead, the most prolific tournament winner in PGA Tour history American golfer died on this day in 2002, aged 90. Slammin' Sammy won 82 PGA Tour events and seven majors: three Masters, three PGA Championships and one British Open. Oddly, he never won The US Open. He shares the record of four second-place finishes in that championship with Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Phil Mickelson.

Johnson Wagner at The Players: 'No, I have no idea where it went, either'

Johnson Wagner matched Paul McGinley with a 7-under 63 to take a two-shot lead from Brett Wetterich, with Glen Day and a certain Phil Mickelson lurking ominously a shot further back at 4-under.

Other notables include Alex Cejka, who has endured a miserable few years, at 3-under alongside former burger-flipper and Q-School graduate Richard Johnson, with some bloke called Ian Poulter a further shot back.

No sign of any of the Bet Detective's tips in the leading pack, but at least he didn't back poor Lee Janzen, two-time winner of The US Open in his pomp, who props up the rest of the field after a miserable 80.
