J.H Taylor: "It's always the one without a hat that spoils the photo."

Today is a busy day in golf history, so without further ado, let’s crack on with things. You certainly won’t see many leader boards as good as that witnessed on this day in 1900, when the legendary trio of J.H Taylor, Harry Vardon and James Braid finished first, second and third respectively at the British Open at St. Andrews.

Boo Weekley: Always loved a staring contest...

IGWT fave Boo Weekley (why didn't you back him then?- Ed) is up to his old tricks again, leading the Stanford St Jude Championship after the first round. The Agricultural College dropout shot an opening round five-under-65, which included six birdies, the only blemish on his card being a bogey on the par three fourth. One behind Weekley is Tommy Armour III, whilst Vijay Singh, Davis Love III (good to see him playing well after his severe ankle injury) and Sergio Garcia all find themselves in the hunting pack.

Our picks, however, cruised along rather uninspiringly, with tournament specialist and hot tip David Toms two over par, Camilo Villegas one over and perhaps most surprising of all was Ryan Palmer, who finished par for the day. They should all make the cut with a good second round performance, but we don't pick them because we want them to make the cut, do we? We want them to make us some money, so get your backsides in gear fellas...

Cyril Walker (far right): "Straight to the 19th, chaps?"

Today is a day for the lightweights of this world, for on this day in 1924, a 118 pound Cyril Walker defeated Bobby Jones in the US Open at Oakland Hills Country Club. Born in Manchester in 1892, Walker emigrated to the USA in 1914, and beat defending champ Jones by three strokes after posting a total of 272 strokes for 72 holes.

Anyone order two fire engines?...

Talk about Sod's law; just when we were looking forward to spending the day in front of the TV watching the European Tour's finest, the golf Gods go and conspire cruely against us. That's right folks, the heavens have well and truly opened in Vienna, with three inches of rain soaking Fontana's fairways and bunkers, suspending play for the day. The weather forecast for the foreseeable future is generally good (how many times have you that old chestnut?), so first round play is scheduled for tomorrow. Whether or not the tournament will go the full 72 holes is yet to be confirmed, a desicion on which will be made before the start of round two on Saturday morning...

Sandy Herd (left): "Vardon and Braid? Easy when you know how mate."

Forget for a moment, if you will, today’s golf ball, with its hundreds of dimples, radical aerodynamics, multiple layers and fancy urethane cover. Let us take you back to this very day in 1902, when Alexander “Sandy” Herd made one heck of a bold statement by winning The Open Championship at Hoylake with the much criticised Haskell ball.
