Another week, another winner...

I say another winner, had it not been for those pesky Swedes with a final round 63, Spain - my pick at 16/1 for the Omega Mission Hills World Cup - would have returned a hefty £160 off a tenner's bet. I'm not going to argue with an each-way return, but I could have done with the outright win, what with the kids' Christmas shopping list to get through...

Thirty-nine-year-old Rodney 'Rod' Pampling notched a victory for the old guard, seeing off fellow Aussie Marcus Fraser on the third play-off hole to win the Australian Masters. 'There was no stress at any stage,' said Rod. That wasn't the case for Fraser, however, whose wife went into hospital earlier that day showing signs of early labour...



Arnold Palmer: 'I can hear the boats tooting already...'

On this day in 1969, Arnold Palmer became the first player to break par on the new Harbour Town Golf Links, en route to winning the inaugural Heritage Classic. Strolling to victory, he became the first to hear the boats in nearby Calibogue Sound tooting their horns to greet the winner...
