Michael Campbell

This much we already know. He's the 2005 US Open Champion and 2005 World Matchplay Champion. He's the only Scottish Maori we've had the pleasure of meeting, he plays Callaway, wears Canterbury, lives in Brighton and Sydney and once offered us a lift home from Valderrama in his hired jet, only to phone us back the morning to say he'd forgotten that there was only room for three people on it. To prove that we're not bitter, we asked him to kick off the first in our series of soul-searching questionnaires.

IGWT: What were your scores in the 2005 US Open?

Cambo: Easy to remember that one - 71, 69, 71, 69.

1/1

IGWT: Correct. Can you name the five players who finished below you in that tournament? You get one point per name.

Cambo: Tiger, obviously, Sergio... I'm struggling already. Give me a clue.

IGWT: Little fella...

Cambo: Tim Clark.

IGWT: Cigar smoker.

Cambo: Miguel Angel Jimenez

IGWT: No, he's got a number in his name...

Cambo: Christ, I dunno...

IGWT: Davis Love III.

Cambo: Really? The other one is Peter Hedblom isn't it?

IGWT: No, it's Mark Hensby.

Cambo:That's three out of five. Next question.

3/5

IGWT: How many players in history have won the US Open and the World Matchplay in the same year.

Cambo:There's myself and Ernie Els; and Gary Player That's three...

IGWT: It's four, actually

Cambo: Who's the other one?

IGWT: Dunno...

Cambo: That's not good enough. Text me the answer.

[It was Hale Irwin, by the way. And he didn't even text back to say thanks...]

3/4

IGWT: What are the two personal interests cited on your European Tour biography?

Cambo: Fishing and movies?

IGWT: One right, one wrong. Fishing and...

Cambo: Wine!

IGWT: Correct. We'll give you that.

2/2

IGWT: How much to the nearest one thousand pounds did you win on the European Tour in 1994.

Cambo: You've got to be kidding me... Is it including the Challenge Tour?

IGWT: No, just on The European Tour.

Cambo: I'm gonna say £38,000

IGWT: Wrong, I'm afraid. The correct figure is £4,462.

Cambo: Four thousand? Really? Good question..

0/1

IGWT: I'll give you a bonus point if you can remember what your two best finishes  were.

Cambo: C'mon mate...

IGWT: Here's a clue, they were both in France.

Cambo: [Sounding totally disinterested] No idea.

0/1

IGWT: They were tied 34th at the Open V33 Grand Lyon and the Air France Cannes Open. Can you tell us which events on The European Tour you came second in 1995?

Cambo: The British Masters?

IGWT: Correct. And...?

Cambo: The Scottish Open.

IGWT: Incorrect.

Cambo: The Volvo PGA, of course.

1/2

IGWT: Do you remember who came first?

Cambo: Bernhard Langer in the Volvo PGA and Sam Torrance in the British Masters.

2/2

IGWT: You're on fire now. What were the margins of victory?

Cambo: Two shots, no, hang on, one shot in both.

IGWT: Correct.

Cambo: OK, move on.

Cambo: 285.

IGWT: Higher...

Cambo: 287.

IGWT: Slightly higher...

Cambo: 288.

IGWT: Correct.

Cambo: Thank Christ for that. How did I do?

1/1

IGWT: Mr Campbell, you scored 13.5 points out of a possible 20.

Cambo: Does that put me at the top of the leaderboard?

IGWT: Yes it does, but then we haven't interviewed anyone else yet.

Cambo: Oh, right...
