Miguel Ángel Jiménez
You probably know Miguel Ángel Jiménez as the affable, veteran Spaniard who loves fine wine, cigars and Ferraris, has a funky gingerish "Spafro" and ponytail, and marches around the golf course with the stiff-backed gait of a Napoleonic colonel. But Jiménez gives us his personal recipe for a mean paella and also tells us about the ... erm, sight-seeing at El Saler in Valencia. We subject The Mechanic to our devilish quiz about ... The Mechanic.

IGWT: Let's start off with the technical ones first and then move on to the fun ones. Here we go ... In 2004, you won the Johnnie Walker Classic in Bangkok by two shots. Can you remember what your scores were there?
MJ: No. I was 17-under, but I don't remember the scores.
IGWT: It was 70-66-67-68. Can you remember who the two guys were that finished tied for second behind you?
MJ: Thomas Bjørn, he played with me. The other guy I don't remember. I don't even remember who I played with last week!
IGWT: It was Jyoti Randhawa, he shot 64.
MJ: Very good player, huh?

IGWT: You were the first player to score an albatross in competition on the famous 17th hole at Valderrama when you did it in 1994. What club did you hit?
MJ: 3-iron. I know it. I have 183 to the front and 194 to the hole.
IGWT: That's right. And who became the second player to get a 2 on that hole just last year?
MJ: Ah, it is the Irish guy. You know ... I know it, but it's not coming to my mouth. Carry on, I will tell you later. (*)
IGWT: For an extra point, do you know what club he hit?
MJ: I think 7-iron.
IGWT: That's correct.

IGWT: Let's see how you do with your stats. Can you guess where you rank on the European Tour's career money-winning list?
MJ: Around 10th or ninth ... or eighth.
IGWT: You are right on one of them. Take a good guess.
MJ: Ok, I say eighth.
IGWT: Good guess. You are right.

IGWT: Can you guess within five yards what your average driving distance was in 2007?

IGWT: How many times have you represented Spain in the World Cup?
MJ: (Counts on his fingers) 10 times.
IGWT: Yes, and how many times have you played for Spain in the Alfred Dunhill Cup?
MJ: (Counts on his fingers again) 10 times.
IGWT: That's right.

IGWT: Let's try a tricky one? When you won the UBS Hong Kong Open in November, what colour shirt were you wearing in the final round?
MJ: Blue.
IGWT: I think that's good enough. We have "light blue". Bonus point if you can remember what colour shirt Henrik Stenson was wearing.
MJ: I don't know.
IGWT: I'll give you a clue. A very good golfer always wears this colour on Sunday.
MJ: Red like Tiger?
IGWT: That's right.

IGWT: You're known as a lover of wine, especially rioja. What is the requirement for a wine to be classified as Rioja Gran Reserva?
MJ: It is a five-year process. Minimum 24 months in oak, and the rest in the bottle.
IGWT: Perfect.

IGWT: Here's a tricky one that we tried on Stenson. Can you describe the dress that your wife Montserrat wore to the Ryder Cup Gala Dinner in Detroit?
MJ: (Laughs) No idea! ... Black, I think.
IGWT: Montserrat was wearing a black dress with a pattern of pink roses overlaid, with a green pashmina.
MJ: Aha.

IGWT: You have said before that your favourite golf course is the Parador de El Saler in Valencia. Do you know who designed the course and what year it opened?
MJ: Javier Arana was the designer. The year I don't remember, 1969 maybe?
IGWT: That was close. It was 1968. What interesting sights can you see from the No. 8 tee box at El Saler?
MJ: The sea.
IGWT: Anything else?
MJ: Oh yes, but I don't know if I can say with these questions.
IGWT: It's OK, you can say.
MJ: Topless girls. A lot of them.
IGWT: That's right. Is that why you like the course so much?
MJ: No. It is a great golf course.

IGWT: Can you name the two course records you set in 1999 and the scores?
MJ: The one was 61 at Parador. The other I don't know.
IGWT: I can tell you that it was at Oliva Nova Golf & Beach Resort, in the Peugeot Oki Spanish National Championship.
MJ: Oh yes... 9-under. 63.
IGWT: That's right. The first one was 62 at Parador de Malaga Golf, in the PGA Turespana Masters.

IGWT: You obviously like fine watches as well as cars ... you've been presenting the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch for many years. Can you name five other golfers who are also on the Audemars Piguet ambassador's team?
MJ: Vijay Singh, Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood, Thomas Levet, Charl Schwartzel, Nick Faldo and the Irish guy. Oh yes, McDowell, Graeme McDowell. He made the 2 at 17 in Valderrama. (*)
IGWT: Very good. And can you name the great cricketer who endorses Audemars Piguet?
MJ: No.
IGWT: I'll give you a clue. He's from India.
MJ: If he's Indian, then it must be Singh.
IGWT: It's Sachin Tendulkar.
MJ: Sachin Tendulkar Singh?
IGWT: No, sorry, but nice try. And the martial arts actress from Malaysia?
MJ: No (bleeping) idea, of course. (** See editor's note)
IGWT: It's Michelle Yeoh.

IGWT: You're known for your love of the Ferrari. Do you know what year Enzo Ferrari founded the company?
MJ: No.
IGWT: It's between 1925 and 1932.
MJ: I say 1929.
IGWT: Well done, that's right. What was the first model of mid-engined 12-cylinder cars that Ferrari made?
MJ: Maybe Dino?
IGWT: It's the Berlinetta Boxer, in 1973. Just out of our curiosity, do you have more than one Ferrari, and which model?
MJ: No. I can only drive one at a time.
IGWT: What is the fastest you have driven it and where?
MJ: I'm not going to tell you that (laughs). I went 320 in Germany once in a BMW, but I been faster in my Ferrari.
IGWT: Can you actually repair it yourself?
MJ: Before, yes.

IGWT: What are the ingredients for a good paella like they would make in Malaga?
MJ: First with love. Then peppers, garlic, rice ... some more love, white wine, tomatoes. But a lot of love.
IGWT: The recipe we were given from a language school in Malaga has onions, frying peppers, garlic, chicken, white wine, calamari, tomatoes, white rice, boullion, Saison con Asafran, shrimp, mussels, peas, and lemon. And red bell peppers for garnish, and safflower oil for sauteeing.
MJ: Ah yes, but they forget the love! Is very important.

IGWT: Thank you Miguel. It was a great interview and thank you for your time. Good luck this week.
MJ: Thank you.
(** Half-point deducted for an audible obscenity, even though we really liked it ... but we also gave Miguel a few hints because at age 44, his memory's not what it used to be. Nice one, Miguel! - Ed.)
Final Score: 15/20
